niffler

"Jauney," Alistair began his violet eyes glimmer against the lit candle. His forefinger taps his plump lip in thought as he listens to the scribbling of his sister's quill, "Do you hear that?"

Jaune's quill doesn't stop. Emphasising that her mind hadn't faulted in the slightest at his interruption. The Billywig buzzed quietly beside her, slouching against the glass jar. It had been made fully inhabitable and since the Billywig's ability to fly was not exactly useful the lid remained off until its ability returned.

"Jaune," Alistair called, his voice deepening as he stood from his bed. His violet eyes flicker around the room before settling on the door. A light flickering from downstairs. Internally he groans, hoping that the day was over and Jaune would finally remove her light and go to bed. Only the sound of scratching and clinking roused him from tiredness. Jaune hums in acknowledgement, dipping her quill once more into the ink as she turns her parchment to the side. Grabbing the next one.

Alistair doesn't answer her, his wand held tightly in his hand before he pushes their bedroom door open. The hallway is quiet and dark, the only light left in the home flickering from downstairs where Jaune had attempted to finish her dinner for them. Instead, a tiny lump sat against the floor. Casting a shadow down the hallway, "Lumos."

Light flooded the hallway to reveal a tiny creature in mid-scurry, watching Alistair who stared in shocked back at it. Before he could do anything the creature turns to make a sprint down the hallway and the stairs. Alistair hot on his tail. The loud of thudding from her brothers stomps broke Jaune's concentration, her head turning sharply towards the door to understand what was going on.

At the sound of a loud crash, Jaune was up immediately, rushing down the stairs to view her brother ripping through a fallen bookcase like a madman. Books fly across the room carelessly and if Jaune was honest with herself, she felt violated to watch her shop, her books, be tossed across the room as if they were nothing. Especially after yesterday's events of her shop and home being destroyed, now her brother?

"Alistair!" She shouted trying to draw his attention but instead a creature jumped out from the bookcase flying in her direction. Jaune lets out a scream of fear falling back on the stairs. The tiny creature stops in shock at the sight of her and makes a quick dash towards the back rooms. Alistair runs after it, waving his wand madly while he ran like a rhinoceros.

Jaune allows herself a moment to understand the events that just took place, despite the loud crashes, shouts and bangs. Pulling her wand from her pocket, Jaune follows her brother into the storage room across the kitchen. Boxes and books have fallen down and now lead through the door into the hallway. Upon peering into the storage room she observes her brothers ass waving hazardously in the air while he rummages through boxes and books beneath the desk.

"Imobulus!"

Immediately the room freezes. A book that had been flying towards her face stops in mid-air, her brother stuck in his embarrassing position and whatever creature he had been chasing frozen in mid-jump from her brother's butt. Jaune shakes her head at her brother, pushing the book away from her face forcefully, before reaching out soft hands to take the leaping creature closer to her chest.

Once she had a firm hold of the creature, a niffler, she waves her wand, announcing the counter curse and everything falls to the floor. Alistair pulls himself from the desk, his face red and orange eyes bouncing crazily around the destroyed room before landing on the niffler struggling in his sister's hand.

"Merlin's Beard Alistair..." She tells him before shoving her wand back into her pocket. Making her way into the kitchen she holds the niffler out to observe him, "Calm. Please—"

When the niffler refused to calm, Jaune rolls her eyes and pulls open a drawer filled with silverware. Immediately, its eyes lock onto its lustrous item and stills in her hands, "I know what nifflers like, now if you could just relax and we can figure things out."

Alistair tossed his sister and the niffler a dark look as he straightened out his messy hair. Though she could tell it couldn't understand a word she said, the niffler made a nod towards the silverware. Immediately grasping with its tiny hands to fill its pouch. Softly, she begins to stroke its head and the niffler stills. Unsure about her new affection after being chased by her brother. After a moment, the niffler relaxed under her touch, gazing up at her curiously while still shoving forks and spoons into its pouch.

"You're petting it!" Alistair exclaimed with wide eyes, glaring down at the creature momentarily before coming to her side. The niffler remained calm as she continued to pet its head, "It's a rat!"

"It's a niffler." She told her brother, as soon as her touch leaves the creature it's ravenous nature of shoving things into its pouch becomes quicker. Jumping into the next draw when she opens it, "They like shiny things."

"And destroy houses!" He growls glaring down at it but the niffler only paid mind to the glittering ring on his finger as he clenched his fists. Immediately its little paws abandon the silverware and latch onto his ring. Tugging with all its might.

"I believe you destroyed our house, not the niffler." Jaune pointed out before showing the niffler a golden galleon. Hardly useful in America now but shiny enough to distract the niffler from her brothers ring. Its little paws grab with an iron grip as Jaune lifts the creature into her palms. Looking up at her with its beady little eyes, it hugs and cradles the galleon coin. Almost like reminiscing of home.

"Me too, little guy," Jaune says quietly only to earn a scoff and an annoyed look from her brother. Jaune rolls her eyes at her brother, cocking her hip to create a more comfortable stand if she was about to argue with her brother.

"Don't do that," Alistair told her suddenly, his eyes narrowing into slits as she stares at him with raised eyebrows. Shocked at his outburst.

"Don't do what?" She asked him, taking a step towards him in a challenge, her hip cocking the other way to lean against the counter. Also, staring into her eyes warily before shaking his head with defiance.

"Do that!" He shouted throwing his hands in her direction as to show her the example that she knew all too well, "Move your hip like that! Stand like that!"

Jaune glares at him, her fists clenching at her side as she couldn't believe the audacity of her brother to assume her attitude by her quaint behaviour, "Excuse me?"

"I don't want to fight!" He exclaims, throwing his hands around haphazardly before landing them on his hips.

"Well, you should have thought about that before you trashed our house and our shop!" She glared at him, her teeth clenching. Now she as ready for a fight.

"Oh really!" He yells angrily, his eyes flashing a maroon red, "Well I—where's your necklace?"

"What?" She asks taken aback, her hand moving to her neck. All anger was gone from her face and it's replaced by confusion and shock, wisps of yellow confusion flutter through her eyes and sprouting from her hairline.

"Where is your necklace? It stole your necklace! You never take it off!" Alistair shouts loudly, Jaune looks around the kitchen in hopes of finding her only treasure — beside her brother — in America. Only her eyes fall onto the struggling butt of the escaping niffler as it wiggles under the door into the alleyway.

"Well grab him!" Jaune shouts at her brother who was closest to the door. She didn't even need to tell him as he wretched open the back door, stomping down the steps after the niffler.

"Accio Mum's Silverware!" He shouts into the street, Jaune rushes after her brother only to view him being physically attacked by a wall of their mum's silver spoons and forks.
