(In narrator's POV)
Papyrus shuttered, as he leaned against his post for support. As much as he'd have like to admit he could pull through this alone, another stronger part of him told him to wait for his brother. His head began to pound, and spin violently. He whined, not knowing what had been wrong. Then, he heard footsteps approaching in a quick manner.
"Woah, bro... You're not looking too good." Sans inspected, frowning.
Papyrus attempted to speak, but it came out as a pathetic whisper that had been indecipherable. Sans looked around, before gently helping his brother up.
"I'm gonna use one of my shortcuts, ok?" Sans made sure to ask, just in case Papyrus wasn't quite ready.
Papyrus nodded slightly, shivering as well. Sans frowned a little more, and then appeared at their home. Specifically in Papyrus' bedroom. Sans slowly helped his younger brother over to his bed, laying him down and tucking him in nicely.
"S-Sans... I don't.. Feel well.. At all. C-could.. You call Undyne?" Papyrus took pauses between words. It seemed as if he had not been getting enough oxygen.
Sans nodded in an almost grave manner, taking out his phone. The conversation was short, straight to the point. Sans did want to keep his full attention on Papyrus after all.
"You need anything bro?" Sans sits on the edge of the bed.
"C... Can you stay h-here... Please?" Papyrus pleads tiredly.
"Course I can bro, anything for the coolest brother in the world." Sans' attempt at getting his younger brother to smile worked, if only moderately.
Sans stayed sitting, as Papyrus drifted off to sleep
Papyrus knew he had been dreaming as soon as he opened his eyes. Though, it seemed all the more real. He felt his his head fall from his neck, toppling onto the ground. The pain was momentary, but excruciatingly painful. But it didn't stop. It kept happening, over and over again. As much as Papyrus wouldn't admit it, he had been scared- no terrified. The pain stopped being momentary, and crept to his entire body slowly.
Then, he awoke. He shot up, and immediately slides down. The pain still lingered, haunting him.
"Hey, hey. Pap, you have a nightmare?". Sans inquired, he seemed worried.
Papyrus hadn't been able to answer, and instead weakly hugged his brother. Sans returned the hug, and held him. Though, Papyrus was unable to stay awake and quickly drifted off to sleep. Sans held him for around 15 more minutes, before laying him down and tucking him back in.
Papyrus became aware of a looming sensation.
"Hello?" He called.
"Ah, you've returned." The child stepped out, and approached him slowly.
"You seem, weaker. It is sad really." They commented, looking up at him.
Papyrus thought he saw a flicker of compassion.
"I believe I am just sick, I will be over it soon!" Papyrus' confidence made them pause for a moment.
"Hm, a good theory maybe." She walked closer to him. "The timeline is changing. What do you think of it?" They prodded lightly.
"Well, I'm excited to meet the human again! Another chance to make them change!" Papyrus exclaimed.
"Your persistence is admirable. Really one of your better traits." They observed.
"You know human, I may not know who you are, but I think we should be friends!" Papyrus smiled hopefully.
The being froze slightly, and then got a thoughtful look.
"Hm, alright whatever makes you happy I guess." The response was warmer than they intended.
Papyrus nodded cheerfully.
"Well, it's about morning, I'd suggest waking up so you can attempt to act normal." They nodded.
"Why don't you come with me? I'm sure Sans won't mind!" Papyrus' innocence made them look away momentarily.
"You really aren't aware already?" They wondered aloud.
"Aware of what?" Papyrus seemed perplexed.
"I'm dead. In simplest terms." They explained.
"Oh..." Papyrus looked away for a few moments, "well, I'm glad you have somebody to talk to! The afterlife can be very lonely. I can't ever even see anything!" Papyrus sighed, and the being nodded slightly.
"Well, goodbye."
Papyrus awoke.
