Writing Prompt: Write about a character who's stuck inside. How do they feel about it? Why are they there?
How can a house be a place to escape to and a place within which you feel trapped? Anya understands this fully, as this is what she faces every day. She can never feel safe even in her own home.
It is the same routine every day, she gets ready for school and then her parents leave for work. Although today is different, today she stays at home. She could do this every day, only her school is the kind that would punish her severely. She wonders why she even bothers to go to school, she has no friends there and she never learns anything, as she always manages to get caught up in everything and anything. Moreover, her parents check with the school very week, to ensure she is attending every class. The mental and physical pain they put her through does not bear thinking about, and she is already dreading it.
This rebellious act happened on a cold Tuesday morning. The week before had been almost unbearable both at home and school. Monday had taken too much out of her. She ended up in her first fight at school, and it seemed like the whole school was against her. This one girl was name calling her and spitting in her face. Anya had enough and told her to,
“Leave me alone,”
The girl responded with, “Don’t tell me what to do, you don’t control me” and promptly punched her. Battered and bruised her ordeal finally ended when the teachers traipsed over and separated the two girls. Although the teachers had clearly seen who had started the fight, Anya was the only one who received punishment. She was taken to the principal’s office and a letter sent home. She was promptly sent home. At home she was beaten by her parents and then shut in her room with no dinner, left to cry. She didn’t normally cry; she had learned to bottle in her feelings.
Right now, she felt like crying again. She could not face going to school, to receive the same torment as yesterday. Yet she couldn’t stay at home either, to be abused by her parents. She wanted to escape, to run away. She knew that was impossible, she lived in the centre of town and someone would alert her parents of her whereabouts as soon as she stepped out of the door. Unless she acted now, she would be forever trapped.
