CHAPTER 4

in the doorway stood the most handsome man ever to walk any of the realms. nianna could only stare. he was tall, much taller than her. she let her eyes roam his body and had to suppress a sigh. broad, muscular shoulders, huge biceps and his ripping stomach was all but visible for her because of a tight white t-shirt. his lower half was wearing dark jeans and boots. he had the strong thighs typical for werewolves. she lifted her eyes to his face. he was a bit older than she was, about 20. his hair was the color of wet sand and covered his ears. it was thick and wavy and nianna wondered what it felt like. it was a manly face, gorgeous. his eyes were the perfect shade of green, exactly the color of the forests surrounding them. his eyes held suspicion and his mouth was set in a hard line as he examined the stranger at his door.

Evans was shocked to see a young girl standing at the door. he took in the dark long hair, petite frame and a pretty face. beautiful even. she had blue eyes the color of oceans and pink luscious lips. he didn't recognise her, but what really made him suspicious was the tattoo on her left temple. it was the mark of a witch. the delicate scribbling were put in to every witches face to separate them from the normies. that way no vampire would accidentally drink their poisonous blood. in evans' opinion the vamps should drain every one of the witches. and then die themselves. 'can i help you?' at the sound of his unfriendly voice the girl jumped a little but hid it quickly.

'uhm, i'm looking for brody?' yeah, this certainly wasn't him. and this guy obviously didn't want her here.  his voice was still hostile when he spoke again.'why are you looking him for?'  "i need to talk to him". nianna saw that he was about to say something possibly not very friendly but a man's voice stopped him. 'evans? let the girl in'. amazement passed in his eyes but he stepped aside to let nianna enter. it was a nice house, looked like the normies's summer cottages. there was a fire burning in the living room and in front was a man. he had grey hair and was old, but as he turned his eyes to watch nianna they still had the same wisdom she had come for. for the first time in a long time the smile that curved her lips wasn't fake.

evans was shocked to see his fathers face melt into a warm smile as he waved the girl to come closer. it was obvious he knew her but evans didn't know how. he didn't remember seeing her before, and he had a good memory. and he'd definitely never forget a witch, especially one that beautiful. evans followed her to the living room and sat at a position where he could keep a close eye on them. brody lifted the girls hands and a sadness shadowed his eyes. 'dear child, i am sorry for your father.' her eyes teared up and she squeezed his hands. 'thank you.' her voice was low and shaky. she knelt on the floor in front his fathers chair, the fire at her right. evans watched her profile and the beauty didn't go unnoticed. he pushed the thought away and focused on his father. so their fathers had known each other. why was this the first time he heard of such a thing?

the three of them sat in silence that only the ticking of the clock broke. evans was getting impatient by the minute. it was nearly 11 o'clock. who was she and what was she doing here? he seemed to be the only one the situation bothered. his father smiled down to the girl and she smiled back. there was something sad about her though. when it came almost impossible for him to sit still the girl finally opened her mouth. 'brody i am sorry i came her so sudden but i couldn't think of anyone else.' brody waved his hand brushing her apologize away.'nonsense dear, you are always a welcomed guest. but tell old brody what is bothering you.' his voice tender and he smiled encouragingly to her.

a quick smile lighted her face. 'well, i don't know how much you know already.  you know we moved to Lelaki after...well after it became impossible for us to stay in Kedeceraan.' evans watched her shrug off some hurtful memory before continuing.

'we were happy there, for a few years. we really thought we were safe...but one day when me and julianna came home we found our father crying on the floor, holding the body of our mother'. pain so deep slashed through her, she had to collect herself for a moment. with a voice not much louder than a whisper she continued. 'he had found us, and as punishment killed our mother. we were all devastated but dad never got over it.  he blamed himself and dwelled in self loathing day and night. he was as good as a ghost. i think he would have died if for not me and julianna. he took care of us the best way he could.we were so young when mom was killed that it felt more like a bad dream. but for dad his life became a nightmare he couldn't wake from.'

once again there was a pause in the story as the memories seemed to overwhelm her. she took a deep breath and cleared her throat. 'my dad was never the fighter. he'd always think first, act second. but i guess this was his weakness. he kept everything inside him and i had no idea of his thoughts until it was too late.

what really was the last straw was juliannas running away a year ago. he ignored all evidence julianna had left because she wanted to. he just..lost it. he got into his head that the vamp that killed mom was back and had now taken his daughter. crazy with sorrow he prepared to go to Kedeceraan and save her. i tried everything, pleading, reasoning, threatening, guilt, but nothing would change his mind. there was no way he could take on a vampire but he was too far gone. his mind had collapsed over the pain. he took his gun, kissed my cheek and promised he'd be back with julianna soon. and that's the last that i saw of him.'

tears were running down her cheeks and nianna wiped them away with the back of her hand. she remembered watching his father disappear in front of her, knowing he wouldn't be back. knowing she had no one left. 'so now that you know the background, i'll tell you what made me come and see you'. she saw brody had tears in his eyes. he had lost two people he cared about as well. her father and brody had been friends for a long time and her mother always spoke fondly of him. 'today, julianna contacted me. she had a message to me. 'something wicked your way comes...join us or die with the rest.' she paused to let the words sink in. 'brody, julianna is a Sihir.'
