CHAPTER 8
the next thing evans became aware was that he was laying on a bed. His father was sitting next to it, his face blank. The only indication of emotion was his eyes, red and watery. Oh no, chris... tears began forming in his eyes and the lump in his throat made it difficult for him to speak louder than a whisper. 'he's dead, isn't he?' evans didn't need any further confirmation than his fathers sob.'oh shit, shit shit shit!'
his father put a hand on his shoulder and they cried together for the lost son and brother.
Annoyed, evans brought himself back to the present. In the weeks since the incident he had been mourning his brother deeply, he had cried and cried, blamed cruel destiny for taking christian. In time he had gotten some perspective on things and realised he felt more guilty then sorry. It was his fault, he had been incapable of saving his brother. He and christian had never been that close so it made no sense to him that he'd be so upset by his death.
And that made him feel like the biggest asshole in the universe, which fed his sense of guilt even more. It was a vicious loop he still hadn't gotten out of.
The moon was high up in the sky and still no sound of his father. If he knew nothing of brody, he wouldn't be back before the sunrise. So he might as well go to bed, there was no use of his troubling his brains with a problem there'd be no answer. But maybe there was, he could go and ask nianna. He wasn't that eager to find the answer, the Sihirs didn't bother him that much.
After twisting and turning in bed for a half an hour, unable to turn his brain off, evans got up. He was going to lose his mind real soon if he didn't get answers. He had always been impatient and curious. Two qualities not suited well for each other.
'i can't believe i'm doing this..' evans muttered to himself as he stood outside nianna's room. He raised his hand to knock softly, in case she was already asleep he didn't want to wake her up. But with all the excitement she'd had that day evans was sure she too would still be awake. As he heard her invite him in, he opened the door hesitantly, still unsure why he was there in the middle of the night.
Nianna sat up in bed as evans entered the room. He was uncomfortable and nianna was curious why he had come. 'uh, hi. Hope i didn't wake you?' nianna shook her head. Sleep was far beyond her reach tonight. She had been rolling the events of the day in her head over and over again to the point she'd go crazy soon.
She waved her hand, gesturing evans to come in. Slowly, not meeting her eyes he got in, and walked to the chair in the corner of the room. An awkward silence hung in the air for a while as evans tried to voice his reason for coming. Nianna just watched him ran his hand through his hair a couple of times. He seamed to do that a lot, and she liked the way it leaved his hair in a messy tangle. Finally, with a apologetic smile evans spoke. 'so, uh, i was thinking if you could tell me about the, uh, Sihirs?'
if she was surprised she didn't show it. She just nodded and collected her thoughts for a while. 'well, your father already told you little of them, but i'm guessing you need more details?' evans nodded in acceptance and nianna smiled a little. Sighing, nianna looked out the window. 'there are two kinds of witched, ones are the Mengejas, they are the good ones. Connected to the elements, earth wind water, in all forms. You can tell them apart from the scribblings on their left temple' she lifted her hand to point the side of her own face.
