Chapter 4:
It had been several sunrises since Jaypaw, Tawnypaw and Brackenpaw had been made apprentices and the clan was doing well, prey abundant.
Brackenpaw was lazing under a cool shade with Jaypaw until she heard her name being called. "See you later, Jaypaw," she muttered to her brother.
"Brackenpaw, come hunt with Mudpool, Spottedfeather and I," Tinylight called to his apprentice as Brackenpaw reached her mentor.
"Sure, Tinylight," she purred. She loved to hunt, after all.
The cats headed out closer to the DarkClan territory, Brackenpaw caught a whiff of squirrel. Her favourite prey!
She turned to Tinylight, who gave a nod to let her chase it. That squirrel was hers, she thought to herself.
As fast as lightning, she was off as the squirrel sped forward. The squirrel was quick, but she was quicker.
"You're mine," she mewed as she landed a swift bite on the prey's neck. "Done," she purred softly.
"Hey! What are you doing on DarkClan territory? Get out before I report you to Crowstar!" a low voice called from the shadowy depths of the forest in the DarkClan territory. Oh, mousedung! Brackenpaw thought as the cat pawed out.
Unlike most DarkClan cats with dark-coloured pelts, the tom's pelt was a soft golden colour and he padded closer, his warm brown eyes looking into Brackenpaw's amber ones. "Yes? Answer my question already."
"I... I... didn't realise..." Brackenpaw stuttered. She was just newly appointed an apprentice, if she got into trouble now, Mossstar may make her a kit again! "I'm sorry..."
The tom shook his head. Only then, Brackenpaw remembered who he was. "You're Specklepaw, right? We met at the gathering. I'm Brackenpaw!"
Specklepaw looked at her for a while before mewing softly, "Yes, of course I remember you. And no, I won't tell Crowstar about you, I'll just lead you back to your border then. Follow me." He padded onwards and she followed him.
Upon reaching the LightClan territory, Brackenpaw and Specklepaw could hear the yowls from Tinylight. Her mentor was so worried.
Nibbling the squirrel she had caught, she mewed to Specklepaw softly, "Bye."
Something flashed in Specklepaw's eyes. "Can I see you again tonight at this border?" His eyes looked pleading.
A weird feeling raged in Brackenpaw's belly as she whispered, "Yes." And with that, the golden tabby disappeared into DarkClan.
Why did I just agree to meeting up with him tonight? He's from another clan, for StarClan's sake! She thought as Tinylight gave her a deep sigh of relief. "I'm so glad you're okay, I thought you were missing and-"
His voice seemed to be drowned out by the memory of Specklepaw's warm brown eyes. Somehow, she just knew she had to see him again.
Even if it meant breaking the code? A small voice piped up in her head, but she shook it away. She had already promised, anyway. There was no backing out now.
-----
Tawnypaw need not have been a mind-reader to find out something was wrong with Brackenpaw ever since she returned from the hunt.
But what was wrong with her? She was her sister and best friend, she deserved to know, right? But if she didn't want to say anything, Tawnypaw shall just pretend nothing had ever happened.
-----
Brackenpaw padded out of the apprentices den, making sure she did not wake up her littermates. Was this really the right thing to do?
Yes! She thought as Specklepaw's handsome features appeared in her head. She walked to the border and there, Specklepaw already sat waiting.
"You came..." he purred gladly. The moon shone above the two cats and she pawed closer to him. "Let's go," he mewed softly.
"Where?" Brackenpaw asked as Specklepaw quickly raced up a tree with herself following closely behind. "Beat you!" she purred as Specklepaw shrugged it off. "No big deal."
The two cats sat on the strongest branch as they stared at the claw-moon. "I love the moon. It's so beautiful," Brackenpaw purred. "Not as beautiful as you," Specklepaw mewed in reply as Brackenpaw blushed against her fiery pelt.
"Do you think StarClan is watching now?" Specklepaw asked her.
"I'm sure they won't mind," she mewed in reply.
They pressed against each other, and they talked about several things before Brackenpaw murmured softly to Specklepaw, "I think I really like you, Specklepaw."
"More than just friends?"
"Yes, more-" and then, she fell asleep on his side. Specklepaw smiled a small smile as he gently closed his eyes. Brackenpaw, he thought as he pressed onto her side as well, I like you too. His eyelids fell shut.
