Chapter 8:

Brackenpaw closed in towards Specklepaw, only to realise him nudging her back in return. "I love you, Brackenpaw," he murmured as she murmured back, "I love you too, Specklepaw."

The two cats were still within DarkClan territory and it was there that they heard a sound. Was it a DarkClan patrol?

Brackenpaw's amber eyes widened as Specklepaw hurried her into a clump of bushes, where she hid as the voices came closer.

It was a DarkClan patrol! But so late in the night? Addertooth, Hollyfeather and Blackfur emerged into the light.

"Specklepaw? Why are you here? You should be in your nest!" Addertooth growled at Specklepaw, who flinched slightly under his cold glare.

"I was... hunting," he lied as Hollyfeather looked at him gently. "Were you hungry? C'mon, I'll get you something, okay? Let's go back to camp before someone finds you missing."

"Okay..." Specklepaw mewed before Blackfur smelled something. "What's this scent? It can't be... LightClan can it?"

Specklepaw and Brackenpaw's hearts stopped and their eyes widened in fear. If Blackfur found Specklepaw, they were going to be so dead...

Brackenpaw froze under the bushes and prayed hard that Blackfur wouldn't find her. She could see Blackfur coming closer... and closer... until...

-----

Tawnypaw was in her nest, thinking about her sister. How could she be so foolish? Specklepaw could never be her mate!

It was against the warrior code! And she might be banished from the clans if Mossstar knew of this! Oh, foolish love.

As her worries slowly ebbed away, she heard the chorus of a voice which warned, "There will be three, the tawny jay who brings bracken by the wings and will protect the clans from an old enemy. But the path is long and tough, and three may dwindle to none..."

Who was that? But she would never know as she fell into a dreamless sleep...

-----

... A jay flew out from the bush next to Brackenpaw as Blackfur backed away from Brackenpaw unknowingly.

"It must be this jay who had the LightClan scent. It must have come from their territory," Addertooth mewed amused as Hollyfeather caught it in a single swipe.

"One more piece of prey for DarkClan, and one less for LightClan then," she purred as they headed back towards camp.

Specklepaw, upon seeing the rest leave, hurried to Brackenpaw, who was in turn grateful for that bird who had saved her.

"Are you alright? I was so worried..." Specklepaw asked in concern but Brackenpaw silenced him with her tail.

She remembered the warrior code. What the caramel cat had told her. What her loyal part of her always reminded her when she was with Specklepaw. And what was probably the right thing to do.

"Specklepaw... let's stop seeing each other," she mewed sadly as Specklepaw shook his head in shock. "Why? I mean..." he started, but she cut him off again.

"Didn't you see how close we were of being caught? What if that happens again? Are you willing to suffer the consequences? We were born in different clans... perhaps it was fated that we would never be together! What if we saw each other in battle and your clanmate was about to kill me? Would you go against your clan? I enjoyed all the time I spent with you... but I think it's time we went back to our clans," she said as Specklepaw nodded grudgingly, understanding what she meant.

"I will always love you, Brackenpaw."

"I can say nothing less, Specklepaw."

"Can we at least still be friends?"

"Of course."

And with that, the two cats separated. Although Brackenpaw felt heartbreak, she knew she had done the right thing. And at least they left on good terms.

-----

"You mean you and Specklepaw aren't together anymore?" Jaypaw asked his sister as he saw the sorry state she was now. He could somehow sense the heartache and knew that she was telling the truth.

"Wow, I can't believe a jay saved you. Right, Jaypaw?" Tawnypaw asked her siblings as they nodded in amazement at that jay.

Brackenpaw had returned to camp after the separation and had been attacked by Jaypaw and Tawnypaw when she woke. She had explained the whole incident to them and they were now sharing their prey.

Only then did Tawnypaw's dream of the voice hit her.

"Hey guys, when you were sleeping, did you hear a voice that called out to you and went like, There will be three..." she started as Jaypaw interrupted. "...The tawny jay who brings bracken by the wings and will protect the clans from an old enemy," he continued as Brackenpaw purred, "...But the path is long and tough, and three may dwindle to none..."

"So we did hear the same voice! Could it be a prophecy?" Tawnypaw mewed excitedly as Jaypaw nodded slowly. "If I'm right, I'm the jay, you're the tawny part, and Brackenpaw is the bracken... but I wonder who's the old enemy?"

"Three may dwindle to none? Does that... mean we might die?" Brackenpaw asked fearfully but Jaypaw calmed her. "We'll be alright. But now that we know the prophecy, what can we do?" Tawnypaw questioned as they shrugged.

"It's StarClan's will, I guess," Jaypaw offered as they headed for training with their mentors.

Jaypaw found Tigerheart looking for him as she purred concernedly, "What's bothering you?" Jaypaw just shook his head and mewed in reply, "Nothing much..."

-----

As the three apprentices fell into deep slumber in their nests next to each other, they were all transported to the ever flourishing forest grounds.

"Great StarClan," they murmured in unison as a shaggy grey tom arrived. "True that, my dear prophecised ones. Welcome to StarClan."

They whipped around to see four cats. One was a dark grey she-cat with kind blue eyes that reminded Jaypaw of his own. One was a black tom with mysterious yellow eyes. One was a small white she-cat with frustrated amber eyes rather like Brackenpaw's. And the last one, was a orange tom with warm leafy green eyes that matched Tawnypaw's.

"Hello chosen ones. Meet the founders of the clans."
