A. Study the following examples of singular and plural forms:

Singular:                                          Plural:

puella ridet                                     puellae rident

The girl is smiling                          The girls are smiling


servus ambulat                              servi ambulant

The slave is walking                    The slaves are walking


mercator contendit                      mercatores contendunt

The merchant is hurrying          The merchants are hurrying


B. Each of the nouns in bold type is in the nominative case, because it refers to a person or persons who are performing some actions such as walking or smiling.


C. Puella, servus, and mercator are therefore nominative singular, and puellae, servi, and mercatores are nominative plural.


D. Notice the forms of the nominative plural in the difference declensions:

first declension:

puellae

ancillae

feminae


second declension:

servi

amici

pueri


third declension:

mercatores

leones

senes
