Lucius Sprius Pomponianus

in villa (In the house):

Grumio hurries out of the kitchen. Clemens sees Grumio.

Clemens: Hey! You are wearing a splendid toga!

Grumio: Are you ok with this?

Clemens: I am ok with this. Where are you hurrying to, Grumio?

Grumio: I am hurrying to the amphitheater. Afer is waiting for his supporters.

Clemens: You favor Afer now? Caecilius favors Holconius.

Grumio: Afer also promised his supporters 5 denarii. Holconius, however, promised his supporters oncy two denarii. I support Afer, because the man is rich.

Clemens: But you are a slave. You are not a citizen of Pompeii. Afer promised the citizens of Pompeii money.

Grumio: Clemens, today I am not Grumio. Today I am Lucius Spurius Pomponianus!

Clemens: Lucius Spurius Pomponianus! You are a very deceitful cook.

Grumio: No!  Today I am a baker for Pompeii. Today we bakers are gathering in the amphitheater. We see Afer in the forum, where the citizens are waiting for a speech. I have hurry to the amphitheater. Are you coming with me?

Clemens: I will come with you. I do not favor Afer. I don't want denarii, but I am worried about you. You are taking on something dangerous.

(Exit)

Prope amphitheatrum (near the amphitheater):

Many bakers hurried to the amphitheater. Grumio and Clemens hurry to the crowd.

Divisor: Hurry! Hurry! We are waiting for Afer.

Grumio: Why, divisor! I am Lucius Spurius Pomponianus and this (Grumio punches Clemens) is my slave. I am very good friends with Afer.

Divisor: See, here is 5 denarii.

(The divisor gives Grumio the denarii. The Divisor also gives Grumio a club)

Grumio: After promised me denarii, not a club.

Clemens: Afer is a rich man.

Grumio: Shut up, you horrible slave.

Divisor: The club is very useful. Holconius and his friends are in the market.

Baker: See! Afer! Afer is here!

(Afer and his supporters hurry through the streets to the forum)

in foro (In the market):

The bakers, Clemens, Grumio and Afer hurry to the forum

The first baker: Pompeians favor Afer!

The Second Baker: Afer is better than Holconius

The third baker: We trust Afer.

Clemens: Grumio! Holconius and his friends are in the market. I see Holconius and his friends.

Grumio: Oh dear! I see women, slave girls, girls... Oh dear! I see Caecilius! Caecilius is standing with Holconius! We have to go home!

Clemens: Grumio, in the morning!

(Grumio flees)

The first merchant: Holconius is a man from noble birth.

The second merchant: Holconius is better than Afer.

The third Merchant: We merchants favor Holconius.

(The bakers and the merchants are arguing. They are all angry)

The first baker: Holconius is an ass. You are also asses because you trust Holconius.

The first merchant: Afer is a blockhead. You are also blockheads because you trust Afer.

The second baker: Friends! The merchants called us "Blockheads." We are not blockheads. We are very fierce. We have clubs.

The second merchant: Friends! The bakers called us "asses." We are not asses. We are fiercer than the bakers. We have huge clubs.

(The merchants and the bakers fought in the market)

In culina (In the kitchen):

Clemens is sitting in the kitchen. Grumio enters

Clemens: Hello! Pomponianus! To Hercules! Your toga is torn!

Grumio: See! Holconius and his friends took me to the market. After they took my club, yelling, "Let's see if this baker is fierce!" Then the merchants beat me. They grabbed my denarii. Now I have no denarii.

Clemens: I have 10 denarii!

Grumio: Ten denarii?

Clemens: Caecilius gave me ten denarii, because I am a loyal slave. After the bakers and the merchants fought each other, Caecilius saw me. The two bakers beat Caecilius. Master was demanding our help. Caecilius escaped with me to the market. The master gave me 10 denarii, because he is rich.

Grumio: Caecilius is...

Clemens: Bye, Pomponianus!

Grumio: Where are you hurrying to, Clemens?

Clemens: I am hurrying to the harbor. Where Poppeae is waiting for me. Are you okay with that?

Grumio: I am not okay with that!
