gladiatores (gladiators): 

Regulus was a Roman senator. He lived an a magnificent house. The house was near Nuceria. The people of Nuceria and the Pompeians were enemies. The people of Nuceria, because they had not amphitherater, often come the amphitheater in Pompeii; they are often rowdy. 

Regulus once presented a splendid show in the amphitheater, because he was celebrating his birthday. Many Nucerians therefore came to the city. The citizens of Pompeii were angry, because the citizens of Nuceria filled the streets. All , however, hurried to the forum, where the messager stood. The messager announced a great show:

"The gladiators are here! Twenty gladiators are fighting today! Retiarii are here! Murmillones are here! Beastfighters and fierce beasts are here!" 

Nucerians, because they heard the announcement, quickly hurried to the amphitheater as quickly as possible. The Pompeians also hurried to the amphitheater. There, the Pomepians, Nucerians, and Regulus cursed at each other, because the Nucerians were rowdy. All were loudly yelling. The citizens, however, after entering the amphitheater, fell silent. They watched the first gladiators fight.

in arena (In the arena): 

The two retiarii and the two murmillones entered the arena. After the gladiators greeted the spectators, the horn sounded. Then the gladiators began to fight. The Pompeians gave the murmillones lots of praise, because they were victors. Pompeians, therefore, encouraged the murmillones. But the retarii, because they were lightly armored, avoided the murmillones. 

"The retarii aren't fighting!" The retarii are cowards!" yelled the Pompeians. The Nucerians, however, responded, "The retarii are clever! The retarii are tricking the Murmillones!"

The murmillones tried to make the retarii angry so they would begin to fight them. Then the murmillones yelled. "One murmillo would overpower two retarii!"

Pompeians applauded. Then the murmillones attacked the retarii at all at once.  The murmillones and the retarii fiercely battled. Retarii at last seriously wounded the one of the murmillones. Then the retiarii attacked the other murmillo. This murmillo fought bravely, but the retarii overpowered him. 

The pompeians, because they were angry, cursed at the Murmillones; however, they released demands, because the murmillones were brave. Nucerian demanded death. All spectators fell silent and Regulus intently watched. Regulus, because Nucerian demanded death, turned his thumb up. The pompeians were angry and loudly protested. The retiarii however, after Regulus gave his sign, killed the murmillones.

venatio (Hunt):

After the retarii left the arena, the horn sounded again. Suddenly many deer entered the arena. The deer ran throughout the whole arena because there was were scared. Then fierce dogs entered through the gate. The dogs, at last, terrified the deer and started to kill the. After the dogs overpowered the deer, the wolves entered the arena, because they were very hungry, the dogs attacked fiercely. The dogs were very brave, but the wolves overpowered the dogs.

The Nucerian were happy and praised Regulus. The Pompeians, however, were not pleased, and yelled, "Where are the lions? Why is Regulus holding back the lions?"

Regulus, after hearing the yelling, gave the signal. At last, three lions rushed through the gate. The horn sounded again The beast hunters entered the arena very boldly. The lions, however, didn't attack the beast hunters. The lions laid down in the arena. The lions went to sleep!

Then the Pompeian were very angry, because Regulus and Nucerians started laughing. The Pompeians, Regulus, and the Nucerians left the amphitheater. The Nucerians ran through the streets, because they were scared. The Pompeians, however, drew their swords and killed many Nucerians. See! Blood was not in the arena but flowing through the streets.
