River

I take a deep breath and knock on the door, silently hoping I remembered the correct room number. The door is pulled wide open after a few seconds of waiting.

"Hey kid-woah you're not Kid" I greet before stopping seeing the boy in front of me was not the one I met earlier.

The boy before me had cropped brown hair and a big smile on his lips. His nose was perfectly shaped and his torso was on proud display seeing he had no shirt on. Sweat slicked his body which made me think he was in the middle of working out before I knocked.

He looked down at me with a raised eyebrow, "what do you want with Kid?"

I raise my eyebrow back at him, "Promised I'd meet up with him for dinner he here?"

The boy openly sizes me up before nodding, "Hey Kid! Someone's here for ya!" The boy calls over his shoulder. His eyes snap back to me as a smirk tug at his lips, "you're the unlucky bastard that got stuck with Ares huh?" He chuckles looking highly amused.

"Who's that?" I ask, my face scrunching up in confusion.

"You'll find out soon man," he says, laughing to himself as he walks away.

Kid rushes towards me once he disappears from the doorway. His cheeks were bright red and he quickly shuts the door behind him. "Hey" he breathes out, running a hand in his dyed red hair. I wonder what his natural hair color is.

"What's up Kid how you holding up?" I ask as we walk away from his door.

"He's vicious man... but he doesn't stop smiling! It's unnerving!" He groans, rubbing his color bone. I watch his action and think back on to how he scratched at it earlier. A possible coping mechanism?

"Hey... do you know who Ares is?" I asked, keeping my voice low.

His eyes widen and he looks around on the stairs before nodding frantically. He leans in closer to me before speaking lower than before. "He came to my room him and Ghost are friends."

"Did you see him? What did he look like?"

"Terrifying. Happy warned me to stay away from him. Apparently, he's the Devil incarnate."

I gulp slowly, "Kid... he's my roommate."

Kid stops walking and turns to me, his hands on my shoulders as he shakes me wide-eyed. "Run! Switch roommates! He'll kill you."

I force myself to laugh and pry his hands off my shoulder, "I'm sure he's not... that bad."

Kid nods his head, trying to be reassuring but I saw it in his eyes; he didn't believe me. "Yea I'm sure Ghost was lying when he talked about him."

I ignore his words and push open the cafeteria doors open. My jaw drops in surprise at the sight in front of me. Food everywhere, on the walls, floors, tables, the ceiling, any surface and person in this room. People were yelling and fighting one another, expressions of pure enjoyment of the chaos happening was all I saw. I witness someone get their head bashed in with a plastic tray, the tray snapping in half mid bashing. That's gonna leave a dent.

But in the middle of it all stood one boy who was untouched by the flying food and fists. He watched the chaos unfolding before him with a blank expression. Who is he? As if sensing my eyes on him his eyes snapped to look at me. Kid made a noise behind me that made me think he shat himself.

"That's him!" Kid hisses in my ear and I let out an uncomfortable grunt.

"Of fucking course it is."

Ares easily towered over everyone in this cafeteria, probably everyone in this building. His broad shoulders were hidden behind a tight black shirt. His arms were crossed over his chest and I saw his muscles bulging under the restrictive material. His eyes were narrowed at me and his head was cocked to its side as he observed me. I gave him a smile and a peace sign before waltzing further inside the cafeteria.

"What are you doing?" Kid practically screams as he scurries behind me. But lucky for him the cafeteria was so loud he was drowned out.

"Getting food I'm hungry," I say, motioning to the food line. I saw the cafeteria ladies ducking behind the counter, watching the food fight going on with fear in their eyes. I pick up a plastic tray and wave hello to the first lady I saw. "Are you still serving food?" I ask politely.

Her eyes widen even more and she shakily nods before standing up. She piles fries and a burger on my tray before doing the same with Kid's.

It's when we're at the end of the line waiting to pay when she speaks to us. "Do you two want a cookie? It's on me since you're not throwing food at us" she offers with a warm smile.

"Yes, please."

"I haven't heard manners in a long time" she chuckles, handing us our cookies in secret.

I smile and wave goodbye to her before turning around. My eyes scan across the room searching for a table to eat at. The food war was still raging on but I couldn't find Ares anywhere. I shrug my shoulders before choosing to sit at a table in the farthest corner possible. There was still food on it but it wasn't as bad as the rest of the tables.

We ate our food quickly, quietly conversing about random things on our mind as we did. We chose to sneak the cookies back to our dorms and eat them in private. Something told us these animals don't get cookies with their food.

We finally finish our food and put up the trays before escaping without being seen. We had survived the cafeteria without getting a drop of food on us. As we walked up the stairs I saw someone in a black shirt go into my room. My heart drops into my stomach and I turn to Kid to see if he noticed too but he continued to talk like he hadn't. I try to focus on what he was saying but I couldn't. I was scared shitless for what awaited me behind the door.

"See you later Kid," I said almost breathlessly, waving to him before he disappears into his own room.

I stood in front of my own door, paralyzed with fear. I could practically feel him waiting for me behind the door. Waiting for me to go in so he could whatever it is the Devil himself wishes to do. I take a deep breath and open the door. Surprised to find it pitch black I frantically try to find the light switch but couldn't find it. I shake my head and step further inside, shutting the door behind me.

It's fine River. You can navigate without light. Maybe Ares wanted to go to sleep after dinner. Not kill you in pure darkness no, that's no fun.

That thought gets chucked out my head when I hear a deep chuckle surround me and cloud my senses. Leaving only one emotion that I was able to comprehend: fear.

I feel myself start to pale and my heart starts beating out of control and I can only say two words, "Oh shit."
