Prologue

*Except for Season One, the titles follow the episodes in which they were adapted

"Auntie, auntie! Do you think I can be a hero too?" Four-year-old Ai Shuzenji was lifted off her feet and into the arms of a woman who was barely taller than her.

"My, my Ai-chan. You really dream big, don't you?" The woman shifted Ai onto her hip, giving her a warm, closed-eyed smile. "The world is a dangerous place. For people like us, whose quirks cannot assist in offensive or defensive measures, being a hero will surely be a difficult task." The little girl's big, brown eyes still dazzled despite the discouragement from her aunt.

               "But-"

"Ai-chan," the woman interrupted, "don't you think your quirk will be more suited for the medical field, like mine?" Indeed, it was hard to veer off the path of becoming a nurse, especially when one was not only related to, but had almost the exact same quirk as the one and only, Chiyo Shuzenji - Recovery Girl. Ai's bottom lip jutted out in a pout, eyes hardening as she continued to hold her ground.

"But auntie," Ai whined. "Heroes aren't heroes because it's easy for them!" Chiyo paused, astonished at how such a young girl can exclaim something so bold. "I think what you do is great auntie, but... but!" Tears began accumulating as Ai became overwhelmed with passion. "I want to be there on the front lines! Even though... even though I can't fight, I still want to help. Because sometimes, heroes don't make it to the recovery room." At this point, both the woman and the child were quietly sobbing, ghosts of the past haunting their memories. "I don't want to wait, auntie. I want to be there before... before it's too late!"

Ai couldn't control her emotions as she transitioned into a blubbering mess, fists rubbing against her closed eyes until she felt the gentle pressure of Chiyo's hand on her head, ruffling her brown hair. "My, my, you're so mature for your age, Ai-chan." Chiyo's warm smile momentarily stopped the cries that burned in the back of Ai's throat. "Alright, then." The little girl's eyes widened, shocked by the acceptance that left her aunt's voice. "If this is what you really want, then do your best, okay?"

Cheeks bright red with enthusiasm followed by a widening, open-mouthed grin, Ai nodded her head. "I won't let you down!"
