Break Time
Participants were bustling about in a frenzy, doing their best to eat lunch before the intermission was over. Ai was scaling the side of the stadium, boxed lunches in hand as she searched the perimeter for her best friend. That dummy, she thought. I know you're probably having an intense talk with that Ice King, but eating is important, dang it!
Her run slowed as she came upon two figures in the distance, having arrived just in time to hear Midoriya's returned declaration of war against Todoroki. She paused for a moment to see if they were going to engage further before opening her mouth.
"Midoriya-kun!" The two boys turned their attention toward her. "If you don't eat, you're probably gonna pass out after lunch!"
Returning to his scrambled mess as an awkward teen, he bid Todoroki goodbye as he made his way to Ai. "I was going to return to the cafeteria soon," he shrugged. "You didn't have to bring me food, Ai-chan."
"It's the least I could do," Ai responded, her gaze transferring from Midoriya's hands that had retrieved his meal to Todoroki's disappearing figure. Is he not going to eat? She noticed how he was walking away from the food area, her grip on the remaining bento box tightening. "Hey, Midoriya-kun... Ochaco-chan and the others are waiting for you. Why don't you go back to them and I'll catch up?"
"Sure," Midoriya said, turning his body to leave. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah." With a reassuring smile, Ai faced the opposite direction of her best friend's path. "There's just something I have to do first."
Todoroki had made it a good distance before he felt another presence behind him. The person caught his arm and pulled him back from his walk. "Man, you take big steps," she gasped. He glanced down over his shoulder to see Ai, but before he could say anything, she shoved something into his hands. "Before you say no," Ai reached into her pocket for a pair of wrapped chopsticks that she placed onto the boxed lunch, "you're the one who fed me first, so..."
He fully faced Ai after he glanced down at the gift. "I'm assuming you haven't eaten yet, either." The comment stabbed her with the awareness of how little she really took care of herself.
"Well, no... But-"
"Let's share."
Ai was taken aback. From his challenging nature against Midoriya and the cold shoulder he normally gave her, the last thing she thought he would want was to split a meal with a classmate. However, remembering their previous moment together, it didn't seem impossible... Maybe food is his weakness?
"H-Hai..."
The two sat underneath the shade of a tree right outside of the stadium, with the lunch sitting on Todoroki's crossed legs. "You eat first," Ai said, burying her hands into her lap. "There was actually something I wanted to ask you." She watched as he opened the box and placed the lid onto the grass. With his first bite, she was going to proceed but was stopped by the sight of smoked squid in front of her face. Her cheeks naturally heated.
"It's only awkward if you keep staring at it. It'll be inefficient if we keep passing this back and forth."
Hesitantly, Ai accepted the side dish that he fed her, dropping her gaze to the ground. "A-Anyways! During the obstacle course, Present Mic said you got into UA through recommendations-" She paused to take a mouthful of rice. "So then, why were you in my battle center?"
