The Night Before the Sports Festival
"Auntie... I'm scared."
Everyone had been training hard for the past two weeks ever since the incident at USJ. Class 1-A had made a lot of enemies because of the villain attack, most of whom didn't understand their struggles and perceived them as arrogant, attention-seeking imbeciles. They were going to prove them wrong.
"I understand how traumatizing it must have been for you," Chiyo responded. "But are you going to let this one setback determine the rest of your future?"
Ai took a deep breath. She stood in the middle of a grassy clearing that extended beyond the city limits of her home, and the full moon's luminescence brought light unto the fields of untapped potential before her. She, too, had been training hard and honing her skills for the upcoming school event. Her shoes and socks were removed, and she bent down so her fingers could graze the dewy, green strands.
"B-But... What if I hurt someone?"
As the air escaped her lips, she closed her eyes and gripped the ground. Her energy transmitted into the soil and gave it a new life. Vines, growing and growing, encompassing her and creating multiple layers of thickness. They stretched upwards, conveying the image of an overgrown tree until it seemed as if the faux branches could reach the sky.
With a warm smile, Chiyo gave her niece's arm a squeeze. "Ai-chan, it's not within your nature to hurt people. Remember why you chose this path in the first place?"
Her eyes opened to the sight of never-ending nature. With a relieved sigh, she looked up, the ground underneath her feet elevating her to the tree's head. She reached out, and with a graze of her fingers, the vines opened up and exposed the new landscape. She had never looked down at the city before.
"I wanted to become a hero," she recollected. "Because I want..."
Ai glanced down at her creation and tilted her head back with closed eyes, soaking up the night's tranquility. Everything came crashing down on her again. The hand, the deterioration... The freckled face. The warmth of a hug... Her right hand gripped the material above her heart, and the voice of her past and current self overlapped.
"I want... to protect the people I love."
Sports Festival, Present-Day
It wasn't as if everyone in the waiting room was bustling about, but there was an undeniable tense atmosphere among the students of class 1-A that was only furthered whenever Iida had came to announce that they were going to be entering soon. Ai stood in the middle of the room next to her best friend, the two of them attempting to control their breathing. She was especially nervous because since everyone was required to wear their athletic training uniform instead of their costumes, her offensive and defensive methods were basically caput. Only when Todoroki spoke up was she thrown out of her thoughts.
