Jenny looked at the man in confusion. She looked up at the woman and spoke.
"How does he know me?" she asked a little scared.
"Sweetie, I can't tell you know. I will though. I promise." the woman said as she hoisted her daughter in the air.
"Daddy. I love you!" the little girl yelled.
Jenny began to cry. She knew if this man died, it would be her fault. She would have to live with the fact that she got the father of this sweet little girl killed. The guilt would eat her alive! Jenny inhaled a deep breath and ran out the door.
"Jenny! Go back to the house! He's dangerous!" the man yelled at her.
"No! I can't let the father of such a sweet little girl be killed! Because of me! You need to go back in. I can handle this." Jenny stood between the men, her eyes darting between them.
"I don't even know you. I can't just get you killed!" Jenny was crying silently.
"Jenny, you do know me. I'll explain later. Just go back inside and I'll handle Andrew. If I die, it won't be your fault and nobody will blame you. Just please, listen to me." Andrew began to move toward Jenny while she was distracted.
Jenny hadn't noticed until the should of a gun shot filled the air. Jenny screamed and covered her ears. She noticed the woman turned the little girl around and covered her ears. Who got shot? What have I done? Everything hit Jenny at once. She was lying on the ground, covering her ears. She felt a warm hand on her shoulder and she screamed once again, trying to break free.
The man spoke, realizing he frightened her. "Don't worry. It's just me." he said his voice full of warmth.
Jenny felt a wave of safety hit her. She stood up and looked the man in the eyes. She had cried this whole time, but only a little. Now it poured out of her like a waterfall. Her sobs pierced the air and she felt two strong arms wrap around her. They began walking up the porch steps when Jenny jerked away.
"I...I... I'm...so...sorry. I'm sorry! I'm sorry your little girl had to witness all this and I'm sorry you had to kill someone and I'm sorry I ever caused any of this!" Jenny felt like the devil. Look what she put this family through. How could she live with this?
"Jenny. This isn't your fault. Your not Andrew's only victim. I guess we have a bit of explaining to do." the man said, looking at his wife.
"Jenny. Come sit." They all walked over to the couch and sat down.
Before anyone could speak, a loud knock at the door startled them. The woman went to the door, noticing through the window the cops were there. She opened the door to see three cops standing at the door.
"Oh, thank God your hear. I understand you probably have questions and I am more than happy to answer." she said.
One of the officers began to speak Actually... we have no questions for you. We need to talk to Jenny." all Jenny heard was her name and with that she was at the door.
"Yes?" she said drying her tears.
"Jenny. We need you to explain everything that has happened tonight and don't leave out one thing." Jenny noticed people lifting the body of Andrew off the ground. Jenny explained everything, even the reason she had left her house in the first place. After she finished the officers went over to their car to process the information.
Jenny didn't see her mom anywhere, which worried her. The officers came back and before they could speak, Jenny started. "Where's my mom? I need my mom." The officers looked at each other and one of them answered.
"She is at the car. She passed out, but medics are working with her. You gave her quite a scare. Not that any of this is your fault." Jenny smiled and ran out the door.
She went to a different ambulance that Andrew wasn't in. Her mom was laying on a gurney with an oxygen mask attached to her face. As if she sensed Jenny's presence, she sat straight up and smiled. "Jenny! Your okay!" She jerked the mask off her face and practically fell into a hug with Jenny.
"Mom! I'm so sorry! I'll never leave alone again." They hugged and cried on each other.
Finally a tap on her shoulder made Jenny jump. She whipped around to see Will standing there. She hadn't noticed until she saw Will's soaked jacket that it was raining. She smiled again and pulled him closer than ever.
"Why...how...when..." Jenny stumbled over words trying to process everything.
"I called your mom and she told me what was going on. I came as soon as I could." Jenny's face lit with pleasure.
It felt good to know someone outside of her family really, truly loved her. "I'm glad your here, but... why did you call?" Jenny said, her smile never fading.
"I have good news. We... we... we aren't moving. I'm staying!" Jenny was ready to jump out of her skin.
After their reunion, Jenny's mom explained to her that the people that saved her were her godparents and that she had met them when she was very young. Everything was okay now. Jenny's mom allowed Will to stay at their house. No one was blamed for Andrew being killed. Everything was fine now. Until the next day.
