They slowly pushed open the double doors. "What the..." Will said, looking around in horror.
The ground was covered in dead bodies with arrows sticking out of them. What was happening to the world? No one said a word. They were all struck with awe to see the peoples' lifeless bodies scattered across the ground. It looked as if they had been neatly placed there because none of them touched each other. The three slowly walked through the field of dead people. Jenny finally spoke.
"What happened here? Where's Andrew? Who were those people? Why did they...?" Will finally interrupted her. She hadn't realized how many questions had been spewing out of her.
"Jenny, we don't know anymore than you do." Will said, putting a comforting arm around her.
"I'm sorry. I guess I was thinking out loud." she said.
As they continued their walked, faint screams began rising from the distance, but the cries were weird. They were all different. Some were screams of pain, others screams of joy. They began slowing their pace not wanting to alert anyone. Soon, they came upon a large bonfire. People with face paint and weird hats were dancing in circles around it. Some were dragging dead or almost dead people from a little shack and hoisting them over the fire.
"Are they... cooking them?" Jenny whispered as they crouched behind a rock.
"I... I guess." Will said, obviously frightened.
Suddenly, Jenny felt a warm hand fall on her shoulder. She slowly turned to see a woman covered in blood and scratches staring at her. Jenny slid her hand towards Will and slightly tapped him to get his attention. Then, she did the same to her mom. They both turned to see what was going on.
"Who are you people?" the woman said, her voice scratchy.
"Can you speak?" she asked impatiently.
"I...we... what?" Jenny couldn't find the right thing to say. It's kind of hard when your life is on the line.
"We escaped some science lab building about a mile back. We don't want to hurt anyone. We just want answers." Will said. The woman cocked her head and smiled. It would have made Jenny feel a little better if blood hadn't come spewing out when she did. They all inched back a little bit. The woman's face flushed with embarrassment.
"Sorry about that. I got punched in the mouth a few times. Follow me and I'll get you out of here." she said. Angela, Jenny and Will began to stand up, but the woman shoved them back in the dirt.
"What was that for?" Jenny's mom yelled in a whisper.
"They sent me over here because they could here movement. I was captured and made a slave. If they see someone is over here, they will kill you. Just... do what I say, not what I do. Now who here can fight?" She asked. They all looked at each other and back at the woman.
"Why?" Jenny asked.
"Someone is going to have to help me fight. I can't just walk away without someone saying something." Will was about to speak, when Jenny interrupted.
"I'll fight." she said.
"No way! I'm not letting you do this." Will said, giving her a look that showed his irritation. Her mom had remained speechless until now.
"Jenny, I believe you can do this. If anyone can, it's you. Hell, your probably better than Will and I combined." her mom said, a smile creeping across her face. Will gave her the same look he gave Jenny, but Angela returned with a 'shut up' look and he turned his head. The woman grabbed Jenny's hand and hoisted her up.
