Butler University.
A private, non profit university in Indianapolis. The university I was supposed to be an alumnus of in 4 years.
I was.

As I went for the door, my father questions me.
"Where are you going with the books and all?"

At that moment, that sounded like the dumbest question ever.

"Not that it's any of your business Louis," he winced when I said his name "I have college to get to."

Now he just looked confused.
"What college are you talking about?"

Okay.
Does he have dementia?

I sighed.
"A college, as described by Google, an educational institution or establishment, in particular one provi-"

"Oh I know all that nonsense," he waved. "What I mean to say is, why are you going to college here?"

"Where else am I supposed to go, Australia?"

"Hasn't your mother told you?"

"Told me what?"

Louis looked at my mother. My mother looked at both of us, guilty.

She took a deep breath.

"Why didn't you tell her?" Louis asked.
"She was just so excited I couldn't bring myself to,"
"But we have to tell her now anyway. What did you think, it's my job? 'Make Louis the villain again'?"

My mother winced.

"Okay back up," I said. It's 8:39, I'm going to be so late.
"Just because you want to be involved in my life right now doesn't mean you get to talk to my mother like that."
I looked at my mother.
"What is it that you wanna tell me?" I nodded encouragingly. " Tell me quickly, I have to get to college."

"Sweetie..." She began.
"There's no college for you here."

What?

"What do you mean?"

"You haven't been admitted to Butler,"

That put me at a standstill.
What?!

Do both my parents have dementia?

"Mom," I grabbed her by the shoulders. "I did. I got into Butler University. I have the acceptance letter and other documents-"

"We fabricated them," she said. "you're not going to Butler, we switched your documents. You've gotten admission somewhere else." She muttered nervously.

What?

I was confused. I can't. I just can't understand.

"Mom, what did you do?"

She took a deep breath.

"Honey we switched your documents. You haven't gotten admission here at Butler."

Blow. "Then where did you send them off?"

"Singapore."

Singapore.

"And you got in!" She said, with some sort of twisted excitement. As if the fact that I got in a university overseas made me happy.

I mean, in an alternative situation, I would have been. But I can't leave home. Not like this.

"Where are you sending me off to?"
My voice trembled. I felt something I had rarely felt before. Uncertainty.

My mother pulled out an acceptance letter.

"You're going to NUS. National University of Singapore,"

It all dawned on me finally.

Yep we're finally back on track people
