{1} The Pandemic

The bug, we call Influenza X, sparked havoc in the human race for the past 2 months.

Millions apon millions of people have died, in fact billions, leaving only 300 people with a specific gene pattern left.

Somehow we are immune and have been on a journey to what was New York City, now an abandoned maze of vandalised skyscrapers and trash laden streets where the remainder of civilisation stays.

Today was the day when my boat of survivors from Y/C (your country or state) docked at the New York shore.

We were a group of 27, mostly late teens and early 20 year olds with a few middle aged people.

Most of us were alone in the sense that we knew nobody and all our family had died.

I am tired and scared. I haven't slept in at least 3 days and my trembling figure could barley keep it's balance in the rocking boat.

When we reached the port we were all greeted by 6 people. 4 of them unloaded the supplies we were carrying while the other 2 led us towards this new civilisation created by the survivors here that we had all heard about.

I held carefully onto a tiny hand that belonged to a 10 year old who was also alone. I noticed his scared body curled up in the corner of the boat as everyone left, so I comforted him and used all my strength to look as if everything was going to be ok so he would come onto the beach with us.

He held tightly to me and stayed very close to my side as we followed the crowd further into the city where we met a less damaged building.

It must have been a huge hotel before. As we got deeper into the foyer, I could see loads of the survivors turn to see the new comers I was with.

The little boys hand tightened as the stares made him uncomfortable and a Korean man appeared out from the once pristine stairs.

He looked very in charge. He must be Mr Kim I told myself. He was chosen to be the leader by the survivors because he was the most 'in charge' person that was alive. He may be much older then most of the people left but he was still a General in the Korean army so knows a thing or two about leadership.

'Welcome' his loud voice boomed across the room. 'I know we may be meeting at a not so nice time but in these unpredictable times we must value all the positive things we can... I am Mr Kim. The leader here. As the final new comers to join from around the world, we will finally be able to begin Project Population!'

We all look around confused. I knew we would have to procreate at some point but not this quickly.

'We will be coupling each fertile women with a fertile man in order to start repopulating.'

The crowd of people begin to whisper not sure if they are 100% on board with this idea.

'Now, I'm not saying we expect people to immediately procreate. We do understand everyone needs time to settle but please just keep it in mind for the future of the human race'

Everyone begins to slightly relax at the fact that at-least they aren't expected to randomly start f*cking someone they just met.

'But before we pair you, we must take note of your previous jobs in order to assign you a new sector here.'

After his long talk, we all line up infront of a women sat down with a pen in hand and paper on the desk. Individually, we all went up and stated our name and previous job.

I helped the little boy by telling the women his name because he was too shy. 'I'm Y/N. And this is Jack.'

'Are you two related.' She asks in her friendly and kind voice. 'Um no' I answer. 'I'm just looking out for him at the moment.'

'I see' she says writing down both our names. 'And what was your profession?' She asks me directly. 'I'm a doctor.' I say while Jack holds onto my hip in an uncomfortable fear. I rub his back as she writes down the information.

I look past her to see Mr Kim talking to what I can only describe as the most handsome man I have ever seen.

His dark brown hair fell messily yet perfectly across his mouth wateringly symmetrical features. His eyes, focused on me while he listened to what Mr Kim was saying, were dark and mysterious as if he was in his natural habitat in this apocalyptic world.

His leather jacket, reasonably tatty yet stylish fit his strong manly figure while his tattoos complimented his slightly dirty yet beautiful skin

I looked away slightly flustered and confused when Jack pulled on my sleeve.

The women spoke up and said 'we are in real need of doctors so good thing you turned up miss Y/N'

I smile and nod before parting with the woman and wondering around the hall with Jack.

He begins to shiver as the sun disappears passed the horizon.

I crouch down and hold him close in an attempt to stay warm. We were only wearing dirty short sleeved clothes so they weren't too much help.

(Imagine this but without the guns)I stand up again upon hearing Mr Kim speak again

(Imagine this but without the guns)
I stand up again upon hearing Mr Kim speak again.

'Will all the fertile men and women please line up in two separate lines here and can all children under the age of 16 go over to the area to your right please.'

I quickly tell Jack to go over to the right while I join the 'fertile female' line. Oh god I hate this, I say to myself.

Mr Kim addresses us again. 'Men please go and stand by a women to couple up with them.'

My anxiety creeps up as does all the other women. What if nobody stands by me. Oh god. It feels like being at school and your fear of being picked last for sports creeps up on you.

I take a deep breath in but suddenly I feel a presence by my side. I turn my head slowly to see who chose me.

And, in that split second I forgot the kind of world we live in as I see the handsome man from before standing proudly and looking forward.

I swallow thickly not knowing how to react as he swiftly looks towards my flustered face, smirks and looks back...
