It's been three months since the hunter attack and things have been as tense as ever. Fergus refuses to let me out of his sight, and the pack has been guarding Onyx's house and keeping an eye on him.
Grimes and a few others guard the cabin while the rest split up and do rounds in the woods. Doc thinks that I can get my wolf back, but it definitely won't be easy. He hasn't talked to me in over a week, though. So, I doubt he found anything useful.
I've been taking it easy. I'm not completely healed yet, but just about. I keep telling Fergus that we should all move somewhere where no trouble can find us, but he keeps reminding me that trouble will find us no matter where we go. It doesn't stop us from arguing over it again, though.
"Fergus, just hear me out. Please."
"Mallory look. I know that you're scared, but I told you that if they want to badly enough, they will find us. "
"Yeah I know but, if we live in Alaska, then they won't want to."
"You want to freeze to death in Alaska?"
"I have you for warmth."
"Mallory."
"Fergus, I almost watched you get shot. We're either moving or I'm going to find a way to get my wolf back, then I'm going to murder the hunters myself."
"We aren't running. I'm not afraid of some humans with guns. And by the way, I did watch you get shot, so I don't want to hear it."
"Fine. I'm gonna see if Grimes will take me to Doc's house. He hasn't talked to us in a while."
"I'm heading down there anyway. You can come with me."
"Is this about not wanting to leave me alone?"
"No. Not completely."
"Not completely..."
He sighs and pulls me close and lightly brushes his fingers down my arm. There's pain in his eyes.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you."
"It's ok. I know you didn't. My bones are just weaker now, that's all."
"I didn't mean to pull you so hard, but you were one step away from activating that trap. You could've lost your leg."
"I know. My arm healed just fine and doesn't hurt anymore. You saved me. Again."
"No, you saved me. Don't you ever push me out of the way again. I'd rather take a bullet than you."
"I wouldn't."
"I don't care."
He kisses me softly and caresses my cheek. Every time he kisses me, my mind goes completely blank and all I want to do is let him do whatever he pleases with me. He pulls away with a smile too soon.
"Ready?"
"Hell no."
He laughs and takes my hand in his as we walk outside together. Grimes is working with Shadow and Zoom and the rest of the pack as we say goodbye. Fergus shifts and I climb onto his back, then he starts running to Doc's house.
It takes us a little over thirty minutes to get there and I always feel bad for having Fergus carry me there and back, but he always says that he loves it. I climb off of Fergus' back and he shifts back as I knock and open the door.
Onyx and Doc are sitting on the couch talking. Onyx looks at Fergus and instantly gets to his feet, growling and shaking. I step in front of Fergus, and he looks at me and stops growling.
"Why do you always protect him?"
""Because I love him and unlike you, I protect the people I love."
"Don't fucking push me, Mallory. I've had a shitty past couple of months."
