We stop for rest about ten miles out from home. Mostly because I'm too sore too keep going, but I make something up and say we should reserve our energy. It bites me in the ass now, though.
"Let's hunt before we settle in here. It's better to do it now so we can just get going in a few hours."
"Sounds good. Meet back here?"
"Absolutely not. I stay with you."
"I'm not in any danger out here. I can hunt alone."
"You're always in danger. I thought Zenith said you were good."
"Shut up. Dick."
He laughs, and we walk and casually sniff around. I catch the scent of some rabbits and squirrels, but nothing bigger. There's always bigger game the farther out you go, so where are they?
"You get anything bigger than a toaster?"
"No. It's weird right?"
"Right."
"We'll have to keep looking again. The Easter bunny isn't going to do it for me."
"Me either. I feel like I haven't eaten in months."
"When did you eat last?"
"Not that long ago."
"How much do you eat?"
"Hey. Dick."
"I'm not saying you're fat or something. You look great. I mean, you look fucking amazing. Wait."
"I get it. It's fine. I can eat, but lately I haven't had much of an appetite."
"I'm sorry. I hate when that happens. I love food. Speaking of, you picking that up?"
"Yeah. It's from the left."
"How do you hunt in pairs? Any special way?"
"When Onyx and I hunt, we split up to get our prey from the side."
"Splitting up isn't happening."
"We're hunting Kent."
"You have your orders and I have mine."
"Alright. I guess we just rush him them."
We crouch down and move quietly through the trees, careful not to make noise and scare off the only thing worth eating. The scent is much stronger, but now there's something else. I slow down and so does Kent.
"Do you smell that too?"
"Yeah. Keep your guard up. My wolf is anxious."
"Mine too."
We very slowly crawl forward and find the deer, but something else found it first. What exactly it is... beats me. We both freeze in our tracks as we stare at the monstrous beast devouring it. It's at least three times our size with huge teeth and red eyes. Its paw is the size of my head and I wish I was exaggerating. Kent starts to slowly back up, staying low to the ground, and I do to too.
"What the fuck is that?"
"I don't know. Be very careful. I do not want that thing hearing..."
He steps on a branch, making it snap. We both freeze and look up at the monster. Unfortunately for us, it's looking right back with its teeth bared and red eyes glowing hungrily. Kent bites the scruff of my neck to turn me around and starts dragging me in the other direction.
