When I wake up, I hear nothing but silence. I sigh softly and try to roll onto my side, but just fall to the floor.
"Son of a whore."
Fergus picks me up with a quiet laugh and sits back on the small bed, holding me.
"Are you alright."
"I'm fine. My head hurts."
"I figured. You want to sleep more?"
"No. I want to hunt. I'm hungry."
"You can't. The sun went down two hours ago. The hunters are on the move. They should be in town by now."
I groan and try to swallow, but my throat is really dry.
"Water?"
Grimes hands him a glass and he hands it to me. I chug the whole thing, but it isn't enough.
"I'm so thirsty."
"You should eat."
"I don't want dry food that tastes like shit. I want fresh meat."
"I know. I'm sorry, but it's too dangerous."
"They'll all be in town. Not here."
"Mallory, no."
I sigh and get out of his arms to stand up. I'm still a little woozy and I stumble. At least three people grab me.
"Get off of me. I'm fine."
"You need to sit."
"Stop. I said I'm fine. I need to stretch my legs. I'm sore."
I stretch my arms out and see Jase watching me from his chair by the wall. I walk over and slap him hard.
"If you ever fucking shoot me again, it damn well better be with a bullet, or I'm shoving the whole gun straight up your fucking ass. Am I clear?"
He nods and smiles.
"You've got one hell of a fire in you, girl. I love it."
"Go to fucking hell, Jase."
"I'll save you a seat, princess."
"Yeah. You do that."
I walk over to Shadow's bed, where him and Zoom are sleeping. I brush his hair out of his face and just look at him for a while. Fergus walks over and plays with my hair.
"He's so young. I won't let them hurt him."
"I won't let them hurt you."
"You are not going out there. I can't sit here and wonder if I'll ever see you again."
"I have to. I will come back to you, baby. I promise."
"No."
"You can't stop me."
"The fuck I can't."
"Boss, don't worry. We'll all be fine. Jase took us all back to a huge training room and we spent a few hours in there. You've been out for a while and Jase figured it'd be better to train while you were sleeping. He knows what the hunters are going to use and he knows their plan. We're ready now. We trained really hard. That's why the boys are exhausted."
"Run that by me again, Grimes. Why the fuck were the boys training? They aren't going."
"My son is and Shadow doesn't want to sit out either."
I snarl as I walk up to Jase and hit him as hard as I can. Blood pours from his nose.
"I told you that they do not fucking fight! My son will not go up against grown men with guns! They are too fucking young, Jase!"
