CHEYENNE'S POINT OF VIEW
"Yes, ma'am. I will get copies of those documents and have them sent to you before the end of the day," I said to the lady I was on the phone with.
She was one of the attorneys working on a case with a few of the other attorneys here. She was requesting files of all the information we had on the case since she misplaced hers. The tone in her voice reflected how imperative it was that I got these documents to her as quickly as possible.
She thanked me and I wished her a good rest of her day before hanging up.
I looked at the small clock I had resting beside the keyboard of my computer to see what time it was. It was fifteen minutes before I had to leave for my lunch break. That's plenty of time to print the copies, I thought to myself.
After handling a few more things at the desk and sending the specific files the lady asked for to the main printer, I got up from m seat and headed to the printer room down the hallway. The printer I had at the receptionist's desk wasn't printing things correctly, so I had to walk across the office in order to print things.
I walked past a few other employees on my way to the printer room. We exchanged friendly smiles and hellos.
When I got to the printer room, I was surprised to see Adrian standing there with his back facing the door. He didn't see me come in, but once I walked towards the main printer where he stood, he noticed me.
"Cheyenne, hey," he said with surprise evident in his tone. I turned my head to look at him. I smiled softly. "Hey," I greeted simply.
I checked the printer to see if my papers were coming out. While I began to gather the first few sheets of paper that came out onto the tray, Adrian leaned against the counter he was near and sparked a conversation with me.
"How are you?" He asked, his eyes trained on me.
"I'm good," I responded. I felt bad that I wasn't communicating as much as he probably wanted, but I was focused on making sure all the copies I was meant to get for the lady came out perfectly. They were important and I didn't want to make a mistake.
It was a little quiet between us before Adrian said something that stole my full attention.
"So, your boyfriend seemed nice," he said referring to when he met Vincent a few days ago.
I tilted my head to look at him. "He's my fiancé," I corrected, "-and yeah, he is nice," I added in agreement.
From the corner of my eye, I could see Adrian roll his eyes slightly. It seemed like he was annoyed by something. I brushed it to the side, not considering it important enough to ponder on.
"He's a little too old for you, don't you think?" He asked, making me sigh out.
I understood people's opinions of my relationship with Vincent. It was more often than I was comfortable with that they targeted our age difference. I was well aware that Vincent was an older man and there was a significance between our ages, but I loved him and he loved me. That's all that should matter. I could appreciate that things weren't always that simple, but it wasn't anyone else's business who I was with or who Vincent was with. The need people felt to address a fact that both Vincent and I were knowledgable of became redundant at this point.
