Twisted Surrogacy

CHAPTER 3

The weeks passed by so smoothly since everything went on as planned. Daniella was the happiest person. Martin's heart was at peace seeing his wife happy. He remembered their days of sorrow when Daniella would lock herself in the room all day without eating or drinking. He prayed that this happiness stayed on forever in their lives. Georgina was so confused not knowing what was happening. She couldn't find any clue to the source of her daughter's happiness but was so glad. Her daughters had promised each other not to tell their mum what they planned on doing.

The day finally arrived when the two sisters were to go to the hospital. They arrived very early and went straight to the doctor's office. They had to wait for a while before it was their turn to meet the doctor.

After an hour, the doctor met them and they made the necessary payments and everything they were to do was done perfectly well. Daniella who was the intended mother was given a medication to help her develop eggs and also went through an egg retrieval procedure. The eggs were fertilized in the laboratory to create an embryo, which was transferred to the surrogate, Sandra. She underwent fertility treatments prior to the embryo transfer.
The thought of surrogacy scared her a lot but after it was done she didn't really feel much pains. It was a painless process for her after all. Daniella and her husband bought an apartment for Sandra which she stayed in with her dad and cousin. It was located not far from their house and it gave them an opportunity to visit her anytime. She was provided with everything she needed together with the unborn baby. They made sure she went for antenatal care whenever it was time. A maid was hired to do the house chores for them. Daniella was so scared and did not want anything bad to happen to her unborn baby. She made sure she took care of her sister and provided her with every. One thing however made Daniella worry too much, she didn't enjoy the attention Martin was giving Sandra. He visited her before and after work which she saw to be too much. He always spent his leisure hours with her discussing about old times. Daniella became jealous thinking this was an opportunity for her sister to snatch her husband from her. She regretted her decision to make Sandra her surrogate. Sandra on the other hand never had any negative thoughts. Everything got worse one night. Daniella closed from work and decided to pass by Sandra's place to give her the things she bought for her. What she saw made her angry. Martin was about to leave so he hugged Sandra and pegged her on the cheek and unfortunately for them Daniella saw it and misinterpreted everything she saw making her leave angrily. Sandra asked Martin to leave to explain things to her.

When Martin got home later, he tried explaining things to her but he only received a slap on his cheek. His wife didn't want to hear any explanation. She began to think she made a wrong decision by allowing Sandra carry their baby. She never allowed Sandra explain anything to her and wouldn't even allow her husband speak. She stopped visiting her sister for some time thinking she had been betrayed.
"Martin I think you have to stop coming to this place." Sandra pleaded with him on one of his visit to her after the incident.
"But Sandra why do you have to get worried about what my wife thinks. You know very well that there is nothing going on wrong, so why worry? Keep calm, she would soon come back to her senses." He said in defense
"Yes Martin, I know there nothing going on between us but you still have to think of her feelings. She thinks we're taking an advantage with this opportunity. I just don't want her to loose trust in me."
"But Sandra."
"No buts" she cut him short "I know we aren't doing anything. But just to have a peace of mind and also make sure she still trust me, you have to stop or reduce the number of times you visit." That was her final decision she made
Martin found it very difficult to accept her decision but also knew it was for their friendships own benefit. He had come to be fond of her. She was fun to be with and had a way of making him smile even in a bad mood. He watched her leave to her room after she had spoken. She didn't want him to continue talking or give any excuses. He left the house after the discussion. He found Daniella lying on the bed, he walked towards her but she covered herself with the blanket seeing him approach. Slowly, he removed the blanket and made himself comfortable at the edge of the bed.
"Martin I'm not in the mood for any of your talks." She said trying hard to pull back the blanket
"Daniella please listen to me once. I know you are mad at me but whatever you've formulated in your head isn't true. I admit I have been seeing her more of late but come on, you should know it's because of the baby she's carrying. I have no feelings for her and she doesn't have any for me too."
"Save your words Martin" Daniella screamed
"I love only you Daniella" he continued "no one again. I married you and lived even in bad times with you. I stayed with you till this time we found a solution and you think I would have an affair with your sister. Don't be so childish. I think I've explained enough. You can decide to believe me or not since I'm tired of explaining. Have a good night." He concluded with a risen temper. He was tired and also angry not knowing why his wife was trying to make a fuss about this. There was nothing wrong with hugging as he thought of it so why was she behaving that way.
Daniella watched Martin leave the room with anger. She shed tears as she herself didn't understand why she got so bored after seeing them hug. Jealousy she understood it was but to this extent, she never understood. She stayed in the room crying the whole day when Martin left for work the following morning. She refused to eat or drink anything. She slept that evening on an empty stomach and wrapped herself with the blanket.
Martin saw her state when he came back from work and felt pity for her but didn't seem to get what would make her do this
"Good evening, Sir" Eunice their house help greeted him collecting his briefcase "madam refused to eat anything since morning" she added

He left to their room and tapped her gently removing the blanket from her. After several attempts of not being able to wake up, he was finally able to. He managed to make her shower whilst he left to warm the food for her. After bathing, she was fed and surprisingly she ate the food without any hesitation. She stole a glance at him with the corner of her eye to know if he still loved her. Sincerity and love was written all over his face, she saw truthfulness and wondered what made her think that way before.
"Martin" she called out his name swallowing the last morsel "Im really sorry for everything that happened. I didn't know what cane over me to do all these"
"I understand how you feel dear. Just be patient with yourself because I'm not bored at you. The only person you need to apologize to is your sister" he explained to her "I know she would understand you"
That night they slept peacefully knowing half of their problem was solved. She felt so good knowing Martin loved her only. She had to apologize to Sandra she thought and that would solve everything.

"What's going on between you and Daniella" Daniel asked Sandra "it's been long since I saw her visit us" he asked when they were taking their breakfast the next day
"It's nothing daddy, maybe the work load has become too much for her lately" Sandra replied back
"But that's not of her, even with all the workload, she used to visit. Erher! Even Martin has also stopped coming here. What's wrong Sandra?" He asked again, this time more curious
"I already told you it's nothing daddy" she said beginning to get angry. She was hurt by what Daniella did the other time and didn't want to discuss anything about that with anyone.
"It can't be nothing dear. Daniella and her husband..."
"I said it's nothing dad" she screamed at him before he could finish his sentence. He stared at her in awe surprise and didn't understand what was wrong. He had a feeling something was not right but couldn't figure out what that was. Daniella felt hurt after screaming at him and apologize not long after. They ate in silence throughout. The sound of the doorbell came in shortly to distract them. Wondering who it was, Bruno volunteered to go check who the visitor was
"Welcome Daniella" Bruno greeted her making way for her to enter
"Long time Daniella, I thought you totally forgot about us" Daniel said the moment she entered the room.
"That's not it dad, the workload was too much for me. Anyway hope you are fine." She lied perfectly well to match with what her sister told him earlier
They exchanged greetings whilst Bruno offered her some tea which she declined politely with the excuse of having taken her breakfast already.
"Ermm dad, if you don't mind, may I speak to Daniella privately" she requested
"You don't need to ask dear" he said and got up to leave
There was absolute silence when the two ladies were left alone. They stared at each other for a very long time, each refusing to break the silence until Daniella finally spoke.
"Sandra, I'm really sorry for everything that happened. I didn't know what made me jump into such silly and hasty conclusion. Please forgive me."
Sandra stared at her sister for a while before speaking. She was hurt by what her sister did.
"But Daniella how could you think I would do such a thing with your husband. What do you think of me?" She asked in a hurtful tone
"I know sister, I realized I made a mistake by not trusting you that's why I'm here to ask for your forgiveness. It was jealousy that was driving me crazy. I beg of you to let bygones be bygones." Daniella apologized kneeling down.
Sandra stared at her for some time not able to stand her sisters pain but couldn't understand why she didn't trust her
"Get up" she helped her get back on the chair.
"I've forgiven you dear but promise me you will never think of that of me again." Sandra pleaded
The two became very happy after settling their differences. They chatted happily for long forgetting what happened before. It felt so good after forgiving themselves. She took leave of Sandra after the happy moment they spent.

Everything went back to normal as it used to be. She visited them more frequently than she used to and always made sure she sent gifts always. The bond between the two became tighter than the one they used to share. Martin also made sure he visited them on weekly basis. Daniel was very happy to see his daughters happy and united once again. Even though they refused to tell him what went wrong, he was glad it has been resolved.
