I know Rahul hasn't made any appearance yet. But I still wanted you to know, how he looked. So here it is. Picture of Rahul Verma on the side ---->
-X- 12. The Engagement -X-
Two days ago, I got a Legal Notice from the Santa Clara courthouse concerning the custody of Aaron, and the days after that have passed away in a in blur. I had no records of what I was doing and what I was not. Rajat and Diana were taking care of Aaron, since I needed some time away and alone.
The radio played in the background, as I sat in a cafe with a mug of coffee in my hand waiting for the lawyer to come.
I remember tears streaming down your face,
When I said I'll never let you go.
When all those shadows almost killed your light.
I remember you said, Don't leave me here alone,
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight.
Just close your eyes,
The sun is going down.
You'll be alright,
No one can hurt you now.
Come morning light,
You and I'll be safe and sound...
The radio sang as I got trapped in my own memories, which this song somehow managed to relate to.
I remembered, how Hailie used to cry a lot after mother's death. She was only one back then. And how I used to sing her a lullaby to make her quiet. It used to work. Her scorned face would turn peaceful in a matter of minutes. I still remembered how she used to hold my fingers tight and sleep. I used to let her, so that she would know, I am always there for her. She was like an angel. A small smile formed on my face...
Suddenly, I was snapped out of my daze, as a figure clicked it's fingers in front of my face.
"Huh..." I looked up in front of me. The lawyer had come. I stood up and straightened my shirt. "...Hello Mr. Brent. Sorry for the haphazardness, but thank you for coming."
"Hello Miss Marx." He said taking a seat opposite to me. "I am Mr. Nathaniel Brent - as you know-your lawyer. I would want this to be quick since I've got somewhere to be in half an hour. So, have you brought the documents I've asked for?" He looked at me questioningly. I nodded taking sitting down again. I handed him the envelope. He opened it and took out the papers.
For fifteen minutes straight, he read the document. Flipping the pages over and again. Sometimes circling some words other times noting something down in his pad. Other times he would look up at me take a sip of water get back to the papers. All this time, I looked at him intently.
"You know Mrs. Marx, when I sat over here in the start, I thought there is absolutely no way we could win this case considering Mr. White's connections and stature. But after going through these..." He pointed at the papers "... I think, there actually is a possibility."
"I'll call you in my office tomorrow, so that we would be able to talk a few things over before the first hearing." With that he stood up and left, leaving me confused.
I had no idea wht he means. I just kept staring at him till I could.
I stayed there, and took a sip of my coffee. I hoped the caffeine would do go some good to my system and calm me down. The phone in my pocket vibrated. What asweet time to call Hailie, just the person I need. Come on god, anytime but now would've been good.
"Hey Hal." I said trying to sound normal. She didn't know about the series of event between me and Paul, and it would be better if she doesn't.
"I call you up after two weeks straight, and all I get is a 'Hey Hal'. What's up dee? Fallen in love again?" She said. See, the perks of having a psychologist as your sister. She could introspect all about you just by listening to your voice.
No, how could I fall in love again when I didn't even get up from the last time I did... "Nothing much." I said. "Sis, tell me." She voiced sternly. It's only logical to tell her and irrational not to tell because it would be better if I didn't hide anything from my only sibling alive.
"Is it Paul?"
I remained silent.
"Or are you more worried because of the rumors spread about you and him."
"What rumors?." I cut her off.
I could almost hear her gulping at the other end of the line.
"Tell me Hal."
"Well, it was on the first page of 'The Times', there were a few pictures of you two dancing ... What? The first page of the most prestigious American newspaper, 'TheTimes.' How could a simple dance make the headlines. The newspaper editors must've been high when they wrote the paper ... and some bullshit, I chose not to believe to."
"What did it read? Tell me." I said clearly.
There was a minutes pause, ruffling of papers could be heard through the phone. "Hey dee, it was something like this...
WALLFLOWER TAKES THE CENTRE STAGE
The so called wallflower of the billionaire world, and one of the worlds most eligible bachelors who at most social gatherings was seen at the back of the halls sipping his drinks alone, on this Saturday took the centre stage hand-in-hand with the gorgeous Miss Marx, CEO of Qera. Yes people, I am talking about Mr Paul White, CEO of the Galavo Enterprises and the first annual fund-raising of 'Qera'. A hot, sizzling chemistry was seen blooming between the tw ...
The rest of the news just drowned out into nowhere, as I made no attempt to concentrate on the words coming from the speaker.
"Hello? Hello sis., are you there." Hal's worried voice echoed through my ears. "Yes." I said unsteadily, taking another sip from my coffee. "Dee, it's alright. The news will most probably fade out in due course of time and people will find something new to talk about." she said her voice filled with buoyancy.
"Okay dee, forget about that for now. I have some real good news for you."
"And." I said attempting my voice to be piqued with interest.
"I am engaged. I am engaged to Rahul freaking Verma." She squealed. I gasped, "What? I mean Oh-my-freaking-Satan did he now propose you."
"Yup!" She said popping the 'p'.
"I am so happy for you sis." At least someone has managed to find themselves a bottle of champagne with free barrels of sunshine free with it to last a lifetime.
"Dee, we wanted to come and over this thanksgiving Is it fine?" Hailie said
"Hal, you can visit my house anytime. And some company over for thanksgiving would be great." I said. "Is that a yes?" She tried to confirm. "Yes dear, it is a yes." I said in a 'duh' tone
"We'll be coming in about twenty days, I will text you the details. Bye." With that the end of the line went quiet. And the fog settled upon me, again.
