"How come Cindy didn't have breakfast with us today? I went to the basement to wake her and she disappeared. Do you know where she is Tori?" Oli questions. Uh, well your aunt Oli, she's fucking nuts.
"Your aunt had to leave to do some things," I tell him with a fake smile. "I don't know if she will be coming today or this weekend. And why don't you call her Aunt Cindy?
"I don't want Cindy to come back and she said don't call her Aunt Cindy," he tells me, moving to stand in front of me.
"Do you want to tell me why?" I ask, taking a seat on the school steps. "Your uncle isn't here yet."
"Cindy, she's mean. Yesterday when uncle Jason went to go do work upstairs, I had a question for math and I asked her help but she said fuck off you shit," he tells me. "I don't know what that means," he says shrugging his shoulders. My mouth drops open for a second, shocked she told Oli to fuck off. And I'm not surprised he remembered it all, he is a pretty smart kid.
"Oli, never say that again, okay? Those are bad words," I tell him. "And did you tell your uncle."
"Okay I won't, and I didn't tell uncle Jason. I went to ask him and did my homework with him," he replies. I wonder how Jason would react if he knew Cindy was telling off their nephew.
"Did she say that to you before Oli?" I ask resting my arms on my knees.
"No, but I heard her say it to mommy. Even grandpa and grandma were mean to mommy, I didn't want to see her sad," he answers, stopping to look at the ground. This makes sense now, why he wasn't so comfortable when they came by the house the other day. If Oli saw how they treated his mom back when she was alive, it impacted him and since he's still developing mentally, he saw it was wrong.
"Oli, come here," I say holding my arms open for him. He walks over quietly and I draw him close to me, well as close as I can since I'm still sitting on the stairs. "I promise that while I'm staying at your house, you won't have to see Cindy or grandparents. We'll tell your uncle together okay?" I say to him, carding my fingers through his hair.
"Okay," he quietly replies hugging me back. I hold him for a couple more seconds before letting him go and he livens up again, chattering about what he did in class today. "And Ms. Santiago said I could borrow two books tomorrow when we go to the library tomorrow," he says waving his arms in excitement.
"You like reading?" I ask chuckling.
"I love it!" he exclaims grinning. Maybe Jason should invest in a home library for him, I think it'd be pretty beneficial. I notice a jet black car rolling up to the school and it goes around the roundabout before stopping in front of us.
"Oli, come here for a second," I tell him waving my hand towards him. A dark car with tinted windows in a school zone, that can't mean anything good. I get up moving Oli to stand behind me, on the edge as the passenger window rolls down. My body tenses waiting for the inevitable but as soon as it's fully down and I see who's in the driver's seat, a wave of relief washes over me. Oli peeks around me to see who it is and his face lights up, running towards the car.
"Uncle Jax!" he exclaims, standing at the window.
"Hey buddy, you look happy to see me," Jax chuckles.
"Jax, what are you doing here? Where's Jason?" I ask stopping behind Oli.
"There was a situation downtown and Jason had to go in. He asked me to come get you guys," he answers as he turns off the engine and steps out the car.
"Oh okay, but why are you getting out?" I ask in confusion as he steps around to where we are.
"I'm giving these to you," he says tossing the keys to me.
