My eyes snap open to the sound of loud beeping and I take a look around the hospital room before noticing I'm in a pair of hospital clothes.
"You're finally awake C hief," a voice tells me. I turn to look at the voice and see Natalia dressed the same way as me, her phone in her hand. Everything that happened the previous night comes rushing back to me and I throw off the blanket bunched at my legs as I jump up from the bed.
"Wait, wait. You can't leave here yet," Natalia tells me as she steps in front of me.
"Like hell you can tell me I can't leave Natalia," I snap at her.
"I think I just did. Last I checked you're still a patient here," she replies cooly. "And I know you want to check on Victoria but they have her in ICU right now. I didn't hear so much but I know she went into surgery and she fell into a coma." I sit back down on the bed, my hands clenched into fists.
"We were fucking late, if only we reached her earlier, even if it was minutes or seconds," I whisper harshly.
"I don't want to sound mean or coldhearted but I can't console you like a normal person Jason. We work in the police force and we can't focus on what-ifs, if the situation changes we just have to adapt to it. On the flip side, I can say to you is she is safe, we both got to her in time and we didn't end up dying in the process," she says with a wry smile.
"You're right, you're right, sorry about that," I sigh.
"Right now we need our Chief that doesn't take no fucking shit from anyone. We have Eiichi here in the hospital too, Nash shot him and his friend when they were trying to escape. It's not fatal but the bullet did need to be removed," she tells me.
"I need to get cleared to leave right now," I say to her and she gives me a smirk.
"Way ahead of you. I texted Nash that you were awake and he's getting a doctor to come by to check you out. It's five in the evening and I woke up only an hour before you so I've already been cleared," she answers holding up her phone.
"Why aren't you with the other officers then?" I question.
"Do you think I want to be the only one wearing hospital clothes while we question our suspect," she chuckles. "But don't worry, Jax went out to go get clothes for us since ours are still damp from the lake. That guy is fucking insane."
"Well he has a lot to fucking answer for and I'm going to make sure his ass stays in jail," I answer as the hospital room door opens with a doctor walking in followed by Nash.
"Glad to see you're awake Mr. Carter," the doctor greets.
"Glad to be awake, can I be discharged now? There's a patient here I have to see since he's currently in custody," I tell him.
"Yes, I heard. He's the one that drove his car into the lake with a female victim inside correct?" he questions as he listens to my breathing.
"That's the one. We chased him from Toronto to here," I answer.
"I see, well the good news is that you're cleared to leave. You and your coworker here spent the last day and today being treated for hypothermia but your vitals show you're okay. Your lungs does sound congested still but if you rest, eat or drink something warm, and take some over-the-counter medicine you should be okay," he tells me. "It's what I prescribed your colleague as well," he says looking at Natalia.
"Don't worry doctor, I'll make sure he's well-rested after we visit our suspect and the victim. We could be here for a while," she tells him. "And we might have to borrow these clothes a little longer, one of the officers that came with us went to buy some for us.
