Is he seriously suggesting we break into a police station? His dad is a detective here! We can't actually do that right? What if we get caught? What if we get arrested? A lot of questions are going through my head.
'Are you actually suggesting we break into a police station?' I ask him.
'Maybe?' he asks, unsure now. It does seem like the only way to get the casefile. But it also sounds like a fundamentally stupid idea. What if we get caught?
'We can't do that!' I say, still a bit confused as to why he suggested it.
'It's the only way I can think of that we can get the casefile.' he tells me. 'What else can we do? You want to find out what happened to your parents right?'
'Yes, but not like this.' I say. 'We can't make ourselves criminals in the process.'
'It's not a big criminal offense.' he says nonchalant, as if he's done it before.
Wait... has he?
'Even so. It doesn't seem like a smart idea.' I tell him. 'We can go to the place it happened and see if we can find something.' He seems to think about it for a second and then starts nodding.
'Okay. If that's what you want to do, then we'll do that.' he tells me. I let out a sigh, relieved he got the idea out of his head. At least for now. 'But I don't think there's much to find anymore. It's been two weeks and the police have already searched for and bagged all the evidence they could find.'
'I know, but they're not me.' I say.
'You think you can find something the police missed?' he asked. It kind of sounds like he doesn't believe me, but I guess it also sounds a bit farfetched.
'Yes. I don't know. Maybe.' Is my insecure answer. I honestly don't know what we're going to find there, but I just have this strong feeling I need to go there and at least try. 'Maybe Nick can see something through his visions? We can ask him to come.'
'He said he had to go home. Maybe he's busy.' Jack says, slightly annoyed. It sounds as if he doesn't want Nick to come. But I shake my head at the thought. He would just straight out tell me that, at least I think so.
'I'll call him to check.' I say as I take my phone out of my pocket. Jack doesn't say anything while I look up Nick's contact number and ring.
Calling Nick...
It rings a couple of times until eventually I get his voice mail.
This is Nick. If this is an emergency you know what to do next.
That's kind of a weird voicemail. But I suppose I could have expected that from him.
'No response.' I tell Jack.
'See. He's probably busy at the moment.' he tells me, completely sure of the fact. He must be right, I just have to be a bit more patient.
'Okay.' I say. 'Then it's just the two of us.'
'Okay.' he answers too, starting the car and putting it into gear. 'I don't know the location exactly, but I do know the road it happened on. Is that enough?'
'Yes. I think I'll know it when we get there.' I tell him. Even though I'm not sure that's true.
'Okay then, let's go on a road trip.' he says. Then he pulls out of the parking lot and heads onto the road. I look behind us, where the police station, containing important information about my parents, gets smaller and smaller. There are answers to their deaths in there, yet I don't have the guts to get them.
