Long Road Back

Sofia's POV

-4 Weeks Later-

"Push. Push! Keep going! Almost there! Yeah! You're standing!" My rehab coach Connor says

"I'm standing. I'm standing." I say with tear filled eyes before the door opens and I see my mom, my dad, Ruby, and the twins walk into the physical therapy room

"Look at you, Mija." My mom says with tear filled eyes as my arms begin to shake before I drop back into my wheel chair

"When do you think I'll be walking?" I ask Connor

"At the pace you're going, I'd say two months tops, maybe less." He says with a big smile considering I was told it'd take at least two years for me to be walking at 100% again

"Two months..." I say trailing off with a big smile

"Alright, let's get you back to your room." My mom says as she pushes my wheelchair towards the door while Ruby bites his finger nails nervously

I quickly put the brakes on on my wheelchair

"What's going on?" I ask

"What? Nothing, mija." My mom says as she reaches for my brakes but I cover them

"Ruby..." I say trailing off as I give him my serious sister look

"Spooky's in your room." Ruby blurts out as my mom gives him a stern look

"I told you I didn't wanna see him." I say as I flip my breaks off before struggling to open the door

My dad grabs the door and holds it open before I wheel away from all of them

-3 Weeks Later-

"You got it, Sofia. Almost here. Keep coming. You made it." Connor says before giving me a quick high five

"I just walked for the first time!" I say excitedly

"I think you're ready to go home." Connor says

"Heck yeah!" I cheer

-The Next Afternoon-

"I'm right behind you if you need me." Ruby says as he pushes my wheelchair behind me

"Relax, Ruby. I'm walking again." I say with a big smile as we come up on Oscar's house and I continue to use the cane to walk

"I think we should turn around now." I say

"Nope. You're going. Come on." Ruby says as he blocks me from turning around

"I'm—I'm getting tired." I say

"Then sit down." He replies

"Fine, I'll walk to the corner but we're not stopping at his house." I say as Oscar and the santos come into view but I keep my head down as my legs begin to wobble

"Okay, Rube." I say before falling only to be caught by strong arms and I'm embraced by a familiar smell before I look up and my eyes meet Oscar

I wiggle out of his grasp before sitting down in the wheelchair and wheeling away

*20 Minutes Later*

"What was that about?" Ruby asks as he walks into my room

"Just like I told you when I was in rehab. I. Don't. Want. To. See. Him." I say as I break the sentence down for him

"But why, Sofia? Why don't you wanna see him?" He asks

"Because I'm a freakin handicap!" I shout

"I still have long road ahead of me." I say

"But he wants to be on that road with you." Ruby says as I slowly get out of my wheelchair before climbing into my bed

-5 Weeks Later-

It's time for me to surprise my family with the fact that I'm out of my wheelchair for the new year. I mean after all Mario surprised us with his white baby mama for New Years

"Look at you go, Luigi!" Mario cheers as we dance our way down the street

"Here we go. Here we go!" I shout before jumping into the air only to realize I'm in front of Oscar's house

"Wheelchair be gone!" Mario shouts before pushing the chair in my direction and I jump over it and it keeps rolling down the street

"Let's go show everyone." Mario says as I lock eyes with Oscar who's smiling at me before I leap onto Mario's back

*5 Minutes Later*

Mario opens the door and we both walk into the house

"Guess who's walking into the new year!" I say excitedly with a big smile before everyone engulfs me in a hug

-Later That Night-

Everyone pops their confetti poppers causing that night to enter my mind

I struggle to gasp for air as I quickly walk out of the house

The fireworks pop off around the neighborhood as I grip the fence as the wet tears sting my cheeks as the run down my face

I quickly wipe my tears away before walking down the street

*4 Minutes Later*

I stand on the sidewalk in front of Oscar's house before the scattered Santo's turn their attention to me

"So...my legs...are in full working order!" I yell before Sad Eyes pulls me in for a hug before lifting me off of the ground and spinning around

He sets me down before we quickly do our handshake

"He inside?" I ask as Carlos gives me a quick side hug

"Yeah." Sad Eyes replies before I nod my head and walk into the house where my eyes fall on Oscar sitting on the couch

I wiggle my right leg around before walking over and standing in front of him

"I was self conscious about that stupid chair and now I'm realizing I shouldn't have been." I say before he grips my hips and pulls me into his lap

"You're right, you shouldn't have been." He says before kissing my lips
