WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1
⟶ 11:48 AM"HEY JOJO, WHAT'S UP?" My mom asks in her typical perky tone. She stands at the kitchen island, cutting up a few green apples for a snack so I grab a few slices for myself.
"Not much, just hanging out with my favorite female in the house," I tell her, smiling with a mouth full of the sour fruit.
She shakes her head, looking to the floor where our chocolate lab, Shy, is waiting for a treat. "Don't let Shy hear you say that, she might never want to go on a run with you again," Mom jokes with a smile.
"Shy knows she's the best, it's you that should be worried, Mom." She sticks two of her fingers into my side, tickling me to try to get me to take it back.
"How are your friends from school? I haven't seen them lately beside Kate and Erin," she asks and I can assume she's referring to Kaia, Liz, Hadley, Jay, Logan, and Mikey. When I think about it, it really has been a few weeks since they've been over to my house. Usually the Wyatt house is the meet up place for all teenagers, but as it gets closer to the first day of school the more busy everyone is starting to get with sports and freshmen orientation and everything in-between.
"They're good, Hadley's cheer practices are firing back up, Liz has softball, Jay and Logan have football, and Mikey and Kaia have been on vacation with their families the past few weeks. Everyone's getting so busy and school hasn't even started yet."
She nods, understanding how difficult senior year can be. "That's how it'll probably be from now until graduation. But you're all really close, I know you'll get through it. Lately it seems like you've been pretty occupied with Liam's teammates anyway," she says, giving me a suspicious look.
"What? They're cool, and we're having fun hanging out. It's no big deal," I try to brush it aside like they didn't stay with us all last weekend and we haven't been Snap Chatting since they all left.
"You're right, it's not a big deal. But I am glad that you and Liam are spending more time together because of it. Plus, Eli thinks they're coolest thing ever, so keep that in mind," she says with a chuckle, "So have you heard anything about their hockey careers?" she asks, and I can tell she's hinting or building up to something by the suspicious way she's mentioning their 'hockey careers.'
"Their hockey careers?" I laugh a little, even though I honestly don't know much about them as players besides the fact that they play for the NTDP. "No, not really. Why?"
She shrugs, "Just wondering. You should ask Dad about it sometime, I'm sure he would have a lot to say." I can tell she knows something I don't, but I also don't think she's going to tell me whatever it is.
"Wouldn't that be kind of like stalking them?"
Mom laughs, "Honey, they're your friends. And it's not like your diving into their personal lives, I just know your Dad would be able to give you a little more information if you were curious is all." She shrugs again, biting into an apple slice before petting Shy and going out onto the deck. "Ask him!" she calls one last time, then shuts the screen door.
