Chapter 4

~Lilith~

I knock on Si's door to give him the wooden floorboards, and he opens his door to me within a few minutes of the knock.

"Sorry I took so long." He says, and steps out to take the floorboards from me. "I was tending to an injured animal."

I hand him one of the stacks and he takes it, lifting it above his shoulder with a grunt. "Where will we be taking them?" I ask.

Si smiles at me for a second before he starts walking. I follow after him.

"We'll take them to the fence. It's not a long walk, and Mr. Stead will be notified of the presence of them next to the fence because he's the one who controls the barrier."

"You do not have the right of passage to the other side of the barrier?" I ask him, to which he shakes his head and we continue down the worn down path through the forest.

We walk in silence for the whole short trip, until we finally see the barrier past the trees.

"That's it." Si says, and when we clear the trees, he drops his pile a few paces away from the fence.

I do not drop my pile next to his, I continue forwards towards the fence. Si looks at me with worry.

"Lilith!" Si says. I stop walking. "Don't go any further, the magic will stop you!"

I shake my head at him and continue walking. "The magic does not work on me."

Si's face becomes frightened and he takes a few steps after me, only to stop when I keep walking. "Lilith! The fence can hurt you! Please come back!"

I shake my head and go closer. I feel myself pass through the barrier, a pace away from the fence, and turn my head to see Si with his eyes closed. "Si." I call.

His eyes snap open at the sound of my voice, and they go wide when he sees me standing there, perfectly fine. "What? Are you okay?!" Si exclaims, then calms down when I nod. "...it really doesn't affect you?"

"I've been over it before." I tell him, and his eyes go wide.

"You're kidding me!" He says, clearly unbelieving of my words.

I sigh and readjust my grip on the pile of floorboards before I jump and land perfectly on the top of the fence. I see Si cringe at the motion, but when nothing happens he stares at me in wonder. I step and land on the other side of the fence with ease. I take a few steps before I turn around to show him I'm fine.

"..." Si gaps at me. "This is really freaking me out because you’re obviously not human."

I chuckle at that. "Pass over the rest of the floorboards." I say, setting my pile down. "Those should pass through correct?"

Si nods, still a little in a daze. He picks up his pile of floorboards and with a heave, tosses them over. They fly over at an angle, but I pluck them from the air and lay them down beside my pile. Si looks at the pile like it's no longer a pile of floorboards and then at me with a look of wonder far exceeding the one which he had given me not minutes before.

"Where should I take these now?" I ask him, placing one over each shoulder.

"Um," Si taking a step forwards, only to get a small shock delivered from the barrier.

I chuckle at his surprised look. "You did not really believe that the barrier was broken or down did you Si?"

He gives me a small sheepish smile and takes a few steps backwards. "It was worth a try. For the floorboards, most carpentry shops will accept them; some might even give you a reward for giving it to them."
