Name of Deity: Amaterasu

Culture of Origin: Japan

Goddess of: The Sun, and the Universe

Gender: Female

Appearance: Amaterasu is a stunning beauty, and she likes to remind everyone of it. Her long hair is glossy and black, and her almond-shaped eyes shine just as bright and dark. Amaterasu is tall for a woman, standing at five feet nine inches. She has a killer figure, of course, and a blemish-free complexion. Her red lips are usually curved into an arrogant smile. She is most comfortable when wearing a traditional kimono, though any type of long dress will work. She looks to be only in her early to mid twenties.

Personality: Being revered for thousands of years as the goddess of the sun and the universe may have gone to her head just a little. ....Or, okay, a lot. A lot, a lot. The fact that some people still practice Shinto may also add to her overwhelming pride in herself. Amaterasu has no flaws. Not one. If you happen to find a flaw and point it out, be prepared to suffer the worst sunburn of your life. She tends to be calm and reserved, but in a very superior way. Everyone is beneath her, even other gods. She tends to be harsh, and has no trouble pointing out the flaws in others. After all, no one is perfect! (Except for her. Clearly.)

History: The oldest tales of Amaterasu come from the ca. 680 AD Kojiki and ca. 720 AD Nihon Shoki, the oldest records of Japanese history. In Japanese mythology, Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun, is the sister of Susanoo, the god of storms and the sea, and of Tsukuyomi, the god of the moon. It was written that Amaterasu had painted the landscape with her siblings to create ancient Japan. She became the ruler of the sun and the heavens along with her brother-husband, Tsukuyomi, the god of the moon and ruler of the night.

Some time later, for reasons that would take too long to explain, Amaterasu became depressed and went into hiding in a cave. While she was in hiding, the world sank into darkness and nothing would grow. Worried for the safety of the world, her fellow gods and goddesses devised a plan to get her out. They hung a large mirror at the entrance of the cave, gathered thousands of candles, and thousands of roosters. The candles brightened the area around the cave in a way that resembled sunlight, which caused the roosters to crow. Then the gods shouted into the cave that she could hide for as long as she wanted, because they found an new sun goddess who was far more beautiful than her. Amaterasu was shocked, and furious that they could have replaced her so quickly. She peered out of the cave and caught sight of this replacement goddess, who was indeed the most beautiful creature she had ever seen in her life. She stormed out of the cave to give the other gods a pice of her mind, only to realize that the "other goddess" she saw was actually her own reflection. Appeased by her own beauty, Amaterasu went back to being the goddess of the Sun and Universe.

Godly Powers:

1) She can use the sunlight to create dazzling rainbows that distract an enemy for as long as the rainbows are present.

2) She can make katanas out of pure sunlight. They can cut through nearly anything.

3) She can make mirror doubles of herself. One that attacks, one that defends, and one that compliments her ("Wow, Amaterasu, your hair looks fabulous today!").

Fatal Weakness: She is weaker during an eclipse, or when her pride is damaged.

Token: A mirror (to remind herself of her beauty and fabulousness.)
