Chapter 13 - A Thorough History Lesson

-

Lorin

It's so hard for me to believe that last night could have happened. I mean, it definitely did, if the sated look on Enki and Modi's face is anything to base it off.

Conversation flows around my kitchen table. Modi and Enki stayed with me last night, of course, while we kept Roman in the attic. But after I had made breakfast for the masses, they allowed him down from the tower to eat. Bickering and not so silent jabs coming from the Vanator and demons alike. I just smile and eat quietly, loving the fact that my mother is gone, so I have the house to myself. Technically, I should be in school today, but I definitely believe that after everything I've been through, I definitely deserve a break. And besides, I only have a few months before graduation. But honestly? I don't even want to finish.

School has always been the one constant in my life. Learning was an escape. I was able to drown myself in the endless knowledge that the world has to offer. Anything and everything was at my grasp. Nothing was out of the question. I was able to read endless books, ranging from young adult fiction to autobiographies from the world's rulers. I was able to learn sciences, history, and arts going as far back as possible. It was something I could always rely on to distract me from the modern world.

But my new future was laid out before me. Everything has changed so fast, and while I'm still learning, this is something that school will not be able to offer me. Public schools can't even touch religion within their own walls, let alone teach such a controversial one. And honestly, what knowledge will I carry over from public schools besides the basic language and math skills they afforded me? Maybe some history, but what use would that truly be?

I need to focus on the here and now, not what some dinky school can offer me. I need to apply myself completely to my pursuit of spiritual growth, and prepare myself for what could come for me at any moment. There is still so much to learn and what better way than putting my trust straight into my God and his fellow demons?

"Lorin, are you listening to what we're talking about?" Enki asks across the table to me, pulling me from my thoughts.

I blush and look down. "Not even in the slightest, I'm sorry." He just laughs before continuing.

"I was saying, little one, that today we're not going to hyper focus on training and developing, but instead go over the information that we've unfortunately had to keep from you. Now, please pay attention because there is a lot of information we need to go over and it will make a smoother process for us all if we don't have to circle back to the same subject many times."

I can tell from his voice that he is stressed, and of course this information is vital to all of us, so he needs to be serious and strict. It's still alarming, though, to think that the sweet man that I've opened my life to can hunker down and get serious. But he's the King of the Gods, dummy, so of course he can. He was instrumental in creating the world.

He dives right in, looking across the room at nothing in particular. "I didn't create the world. The world created me. As close as I can explain it, it was like the big bang scientists believe in. Nebulas clashed, ripping a tear into space and time, shattering and creating the planets. The strongest part stayed bright and brilliant; the sun.

"That's why we all draw as much power as we possibly can from the sun. It is instrumental, of course, in our survival and health. Even the humans not aware of us demons, or God in general, flock to the sun, basking in the warmth and the feeling of love it can give us. It's because even if people aren't aware of it, subconsciously, deep within the very fibers of their souls, that's where their true self comes from. Of course, some people have more of an earth base in their souls, some have extra sun, while others have an extra dose of stardust. This just means each individual truly is unique.
