Keefe's POV

I hold my breath, waiting for either her acceptance or denial. Sophie looks at me, and I can't help but think that I don't deserve this perfect girl, whose little flaws I love.

"But, what about the Match?" She asks, while my heart stops.

"I don't care about that Soph, I never did." I say, truth laced in my words.

"Then.. Yes! A thousand times yes!" Sophie exclaims.

I slide the gold ring, with ice blue gems on her finger. She kisses me, but it isn't like the kiss we shared before. This one was full of passion and joy. I wrap y ars around her tiny waist, and kiss her like I never want to stop.

A man clears his throat behind us

We stumble apart, and my heart drops when I see who it is.

~~~~~~
Sophie's POV
My breath catches as I take in the person in front of me.
"Alden? What's going on?" I ask, feeling guilt churn in my stomach.
He just shook his head and said, "I'm sorry Sophie."
I took a step closer, and upon further inspection, realized that there were tears glimmering in Alden's eyes. Simultaneously, I noticed that he smelled like smoke, and that there were wrinkles in his outfit.
"What happened," I say, tears welling up.
"There.... There was a fire, and we," his voice cracked, "We couldn't save everyone."
"Who?" I manage to choke out, breathing heavily.
"Edaline and Grady."
I start sobbing into Keefe's arms.
"Where are they? Is everyone else okay?" I hear Keefe's voice, thick with sorrow, ask Alden.
"With Elwin, and I told Dex to hail his parents."
"Dex was there?"
"And Biana, but she... she," Alden finally breaks down.
"My baby girl is struggling to survive." He says, after a long pause.
~~~~~~~

Biana's POV
(In the time of the accident)

I flop onto my bed, and hear Mom call upstairs, "Biana, Grady and Edaline are coming for dinner. Get ready."

"Okay, Mom!"

I haul myself off my bed, and walk over to your enormous closet.

"Oh, and I forgot to tell you- Dex is also coming." Mom yells up the stairs.

Okay then, I will have to look especially good. The butterflies reappeared in my stomach. Darn it! Why am I always so nervous around Dex?

I look at my wardrobe, and once that my clothes are three-fourths teal.

I sigh, and pull out a gorgeous periwinkle v-neck with spaghetti straps. It flowed down until about my mid-thigh, where there was a slit on my right side.

For my hair, I decide to do an elaborate updo.

And lastly for my makeup, I kept it simple: smoky eyes, and pale pink lipstick.

~~~~~~
"Dex's POV
I leap to Everglen, with a box in my pocket.
"Hey, Dex. Come right in," Alden said, with a kind smile.
"Ummm, actually, can I talk to you out here for a second?" I ask, my fingers twitching.
"Of course."
Alden closes the doors of his enormous estate, and I remind myself to stay calm, and that everything will be alright.
"Do I have permission to marry your daughter?" I ask, feeling my fingernails digging into my skin.
Alden sighed, and responded, "You're a nice boy, who has made my Biana happy for these past couple of years. Yes, you have my blessing to marry my daughter."
My heart lifts and I break out grinning.
"Thank you sir," I say.
Biana's POV
"Biana, Dex is here!" Dad yells.
"Coming!" I reply.
I walk down the stairs, carefully trying not to trip, because somehow Sophie's clumsiness has worn off on me.
I hear a sharp intake of breath as I enter the room. Dex walks to my side, and I can't help but admire how handsome he is tonight. I kiss him on the nose, so that my parents don't start talking about "young love" again.
The doorbell rings and I say, "That must be Edaline and Grady. I'll get it."
I saunter over to the door and open it to my best friend's parents.
"Hi!!" I say, with a sugary smile.
"Hello, Biana. Do you know where Sophie is?" Grady said.
"Oh, she's on a date with Keefe," Dex piped up.
Grady muttered something about "That Boy" under his breath.
~~~~~~~~

"So, would you please have a seat?" Mom says to everyone. "Fitz will be out with food in a moment."

That statement immediately puts a damper on the mood.

"Of course, Della," Edaline says, ever the peacemaker.

We all sit around the table to wait for Fitz.

"It smells like smoke," Grady says. "Is everything alright?"

I grab Dex's hand and pull him toward the kitchen.

"Biana, where are you going?" Dad calls.

"To check on Fitz."

We rush over there, but before I can go in, Dex points to the smoke that is trailing from under the door. I shove the door open, and immediately start coughing.

I strain my eyes to see what is happening, and see Fitz alone, with a cloaked figure , who must've been a pyrokinetic, judging by the way that the flames weren't hurting him.

"FITZ!" I yell, the smoke choking me.

He turns and shakes his head.

I feel panic blossoming, and I start breathing heavily, which was a mistake, because my lungs were filled with smoke.

I start seeing spots, and then- pain.

Hot, unrelenting pain.

Scorching my body.

When will this be over?

I scream, and fall on the floor.

I'm just conscious enough to feel arms pick me up and carry me out.

AN
I am a cruel soul.

On that note, Happy Easter!!

Don't worry, everything will turn out just fine.

I think.

Please don't hate me
