Chapter 5: Maybe This Whole Breaking Out Thing Isn't So Easy

Sssss

The faint sound, similar to the air escaping a small hole in a tire fills my ears. What is that?

As if he were answering my unspoken question, Nico perks up and says in his ever-so-cheery voice, "Oh, this stuff makes you sleepy. They had this in the Finnish prison!"

Sleeping gas? What a pain... "We'd better get out." From previous experience, sleeping gas this potent could keep us out for days. "If we inhale this now, we'll be out cold in seconds." Without waiting for an answer, I kick through the nearest vent in order to avoid the gas. I thoughtlessly jump to the floor and bend my knees on impact in order to lessen the amount of force taken to my spine and legs. I hear 2 more thuds behind me; one to the right and a second to the left. Based off of the thunk of a chain and ball to my left, I'm assuming that's where Nico ended up.

Wait... Only 2? What about-

As if responding to my thoughts, Rock comes crashing down on top of us.

"Ow..." I go to complain to Rock about him carelessly landing on us, but I cut myself off. "Huh?" Right behind me, I hear three voices reflect my confusion. All of a sudden, I am aware that the floor we are on is slightly tilted. And all for a reason made clear as a giant ball comes rolling towards us. There was no hesitation as the four of us scrambled to turn around and sprint the other direction. I ended up at the back of the herd because of my, ahem, physical disadvantage... It isn't my fault that they can run so fast-!

"Looks like they're getting serious!" Just now?! What does Rock mean by getting serious? Haven't they been all along?

"They had this in the Russian prison, too!" Uno exclaims, seemingly unfazed by the situation.

"What do we do?"

With no time to make an actual plan, I just answer the seemingly panicked green-haired boy with the first thing that comes to mind. "For now, just run!"

And we do just that. Except, there is just one small problem. Nico futilely shouts out the obvious, "It's a dead end!"

Looking around, there is only one way to go now, and even though it seems too convenient, I still go for it. "The trash chute!"

"Wait! Not there!" Uno tries to warn me, but as I reconsider my choice, the force of a body hitting me pushes me in. I hear the shouts of the other three above me along with my own voice, indicating that we all ended up here. In the middle of my free fall, two things happened. One, I notice that the floor that I am quickly falling towards is covered in an electric current, guaranteeing a considerably painful landing for any person. The second thing is that I am yanked to a halt by the collar of my uniform, stopping my descent towards the less than desirable outcome I was ready to accept. A relieved sigh escapes Uno's mouth as I quietly feel my own relief swell up. Something falls past my face, and by instinct, I catch it. Looking down, I see that it's Uno's hat.

Then my relief turns into slight anger. "What the hell?!" I angrily grit out.

"A high voltage current... I figured as much" There is a hint of disgust and rage in his voice. That explains why he warned us not to come down this way.
