“I don’t exist if I don’t have her, the sun doesn’t shine

The world doesn’t turn around, alright, alright”

I am at an award show with my band mates. I can’t believe that we had gotten nominated again after just receiving another award last week from another show. My life had been so fast-tracked these last four years and it is rarely that I get time to reflect on my fortune.

I am spacing out and nearly don’t hear as they call our name but thankfully the boys pull me up with them and no one seem to notice my slight delay. We take the stage and as usual we have appointed a member to speak on all of our behalf.

I always feel slightly uncomfortable on stage when we aren’t performing; it just feels weird to be up here with no purpose. I let my eyes wander the crowd and I find her face, almost instinctively. She mouths an “are you okay?” and I smile slightly to reassure her. She somehow must have noticed my hesitation before getting out of my seat.

Her name is Freya and I’ve known her for the last four years when this crazy rollercoaster began. She is smiling brightly at me and I can’t help but smile back. She works with my management and has been an important part of my life ever since she entered it. There was never been anything between us but I love her company and value her opinion more than I would care to admit.

I know that she doesn’t see us as a job but as her friends and she treats us as such. Honestly, the world doesn’t turn around without her, or at least our world. It seems like eternal sunshine when she’s around but when she’s gone the sun doesn’t shine.

We finish our speech and walk back to our seats. Loud applauds meets us and I don’t fight the smile on my lips. I’m so grateful for all of this.

After the show is finished, we still have to do a few interviews and are ushered away quickly. The hassle can be a bit stressful at times but I try not to let it get to me. We are moved to a room clearly set up for our interview and we diligently take our seats.

Sometimes we get good interviewers and other times they are rude and have no respect or sense of privacy. I watch trying to assess this guy. Freya joins the room and stand quietly by the door in a beautiful dress that makes me think things I shouldn’t.

The interviewer turns out to be a nice guy and he’s not much older than us. We have a good time kidding around and talking about our tour and upcoming album. When we finish, Freya rushes to our side.

“You did so well, boys,” she say and clap her hands in excitement. We pull her into a group hug; I know that all of the boys also are fond of her. Who wouldn’t be? She is the best girl in the world.

“We didn’t want to let you down,” I say in a joking tone but mean every word.

“You never let me down,” she assures me.

“Who’s this?” the interviewer asks.

Freya turns to him and introduces herself. The boys start to talk amongst themselves but I don’t listen as I try to hear Freya’s conversation with the interviewer. It doesn’t take long before I move to join them out of curiosity.

“This is some girl you’ve got,” the interviewer comments and Freya turns away while looking both flattered and embarrassed.

“Yes, she’s helped built the band immensely,” I say.

“I bet. You wouldn’t be where you are today without her, right?” he asks me but looks at Freya.

“Sure, I mean I don’t exist if I don’t have her,” I say and protectively put my arm around her shoulder. She tenses at my touch but don’t push me away. The interviewer seems to get the message and leaves with a quick goodbye. No body is going to steal Freya away from us, from me. She’s my girl, my best female friend.

“What was that about?” Freya asks me while looking at me with those intense eyes.

“Nothing, alright? I didn’t want him to bother you,” I say but I know it isn’t the entire truth. I felt something stir inside me that compelled me to go to her side. I just don't know what.

Alright,” she says almost inaudibly.
