Chapter eight
|1943, 13 october|

'Please, shut up, Hermione! Or the whole school will know that I fancy Pandora!' he said laughing loudly and throwing toffees at me. I managed to avoid them quite well, all the extremely unhealthy sweets reaching the carpet of the common room until one of them hit Ruth in the back of her head. I pressed my hand on my mouth not to let out a laugh, but I failed horribly when Thorn started laughing to the half nervous and half amused look on the face of the black haired girl. She picked up all the sweets from the floor with a movement of the wand and threw them at me and Thorn, but I cast an Immobulus and let them fall.

'First, Thorn I'm sure he does not fancy anyone. A sixth year?' Ruth laughed it off. 'And second, I wanna study!' she narrowed her eyes. 'Maybe you are prepared for tomorrow - which I doubt it - but I am not! And I want to pass Merrythought's test with a higher grade to p-' Ruth stopped suddenly when one of Thorn's pillows hit her and with with a nonchalant air he whispered to me 'Is she over already?' clear enough for her to hear.

'That's enough you little garbage!' she took the pillow in her hand and approached Thorn threateningly with a wicked smile. He burst into laughter at the sight of his angry friend. Without waiting for anything else, Ruth throw the pillow at him raising other ones in the air ready to kick him, but I dodged the first one throwing behind me.

A look of shocked appeared on Ruth's face at the sight behind me followed by Thorn's hilarious expression, but I overlooked it - not having the interest to see where the pillow landed. I put a hand on Ruth's shoulder and I tried to calm her.

'Come on, don't fight now. Let's relax a few minutes, play a round of Wizard's Chess and I will help you with tomorrow's defence ag-' I told her but she cut me off.

'Hermione, the pillow-' she started saying.

'You studied all day. I promise I will help you but now let's ha-' I continued and Thorn started laughing. It was strange to be the one telling someone to relax, but I kinda liked it. I didn't have much to worry about, and I just wanted to spend some time with my friends.

'What is it?' I said with a frown but a cough behind me made me come back to reality. I slowly turned to the person behind me wishing he wasn't who I thought he was. Gulp.

'Quite a speech you had,' Tom said emotionless. 'Here,' he gave me the pillow. Then, he turned around to the stairs to boy's dormitory and added. 'Careful, Willowtree. The next one will be burned. And Black, if I were you, I would study - not wasting my time.'

In a few seconds, Tom was gone. I looked at my friends with wide eyes, being half amused by the situation.

'Well, you escaped quickly. I don't know what Riddle did to my sister, but she cried all day long,' Ruth told us.

'I noticed that she was somewho different today. Some love interesat maybe?' Thorn asked curious eating more sweets.

'My sister fancy Riddle. If I didn't know her, I'd say she loves him,' Ruth told us with a concerned air. 'Merlin, I even don't know if I know her!'

'Don't worry Ruthy, everybody fancy Riddle in this school. It's normal,' Thorn added and rolled his eyes.

It was true. In the eyes of both students and teachers Tom was the perfect boy. He was the poor boy from an orphanage who didn't have a mother to love him and a father to taught him. The brilliant student who exceled in every subject. The model prefect and teacher favorite. It seemed that everybody overlooked his outbursts of anger and the wickedness in his eyes.
