Soldier looked to the setting sun, its light casting the sky ablaze. A light breeze whisked the tall stalks of yellow grass, making it wave like a stormy sea. The moon rose from the opposite horizon, chasing the sun away. The rolling hills seemed to blend with the sky, the land and sky above creating a masterpiece of beauty.

He stayed silent, for his stone heart, which he vowed to never show emotion, was now cracked. The men behind him watched along with him, not knowing how to comfort him. He stared on, watching as the sun continued the last steps of its journey.

The landscape darkened as the sun dipped over the horizon, the Moon's glow bathing the hills of grass silver and blue. The stars shone gold and silver, swirling and twinkling. The air was quiet, as if mourning with the nine men as they stood.

Soldier's mind, usually filled with anger and pride, was numb. All he felt was pain. The pain in his heart was different, for he could not simply ignore it and cast it aside like physical pain. And he just stood there, looking across the landscape from the cliff edge. He felt that if he moved, his demeanor and wall of defense would crumble to nothing.

His companions began to leave, one by one. Each of them pitying the grieving man, for their pain was minuscule compared to his. Yet, he stood there, gazing at the horizon.

All but one stayed, his close friend.

He walked up to Soldier, removing his goggles to wipe his misty eyes. He reached his hand hesitantly, before placing it on his shoulder. No words needed to be said, for that simple gesture was enough to further crack Soldier's heart. The Engineer left, following the other mercenaries down the slope. Soldier closed his eyes, gritting his jaws, trying to hold back the emense pain in his heart.

A tear rolled down his cheek, the strong lump in his throat choking him. A part of his soul was now gone forever. The emptiness was tearing him apart, sinking his mind into nothingness. He looked up the the stars once more, a sudden calm enveloping him.

He felt a presence beside him, but he did not look. He knew who it was.

The breeze picked up again, and he smiled softly and watched as the soft glow beside him floated before him, gliding up to join the countless stars above. He rose his arm, saluting to the heavens above as the wind carried it away.

"You were good, son." He said quietly, taking a breath as more tears pooled in his eyes. "Real good."

The stars seemed gleam, their light swirling even brighter than before. Soldier looked up to their glow before speaking.

"The best there ever will be." He set his arm down, his gaze falling to the small daisies that grew around him.

"You have no idea what a great warrior is joining your ranks." He said calmly, looking back up. "He is leaving a legacy here, so treat him well."

He stared at a bright star he hadn't seen before, another tear rolling down his rough cheek. He smiled and saluted once more.

"I'll meet you after the battle tomorrow." He said.

"See you soon."
