I've never seen Henry fall apart before. He came off his horse, eyes red, and embraced me in a hug. "What is it?" I ask and continue cradling James. "The Confederates bombarded the Union today. In South Carolina. They're calling all able-bodied men to fight the Yankees. The enlistment was mandatory." He falls on the couch in the parlor and I place James in his cradle, then climb next to Henry and lay on his chest. "How long do I have?" I ask. "We're deployed tomorrow morning." The words sting like no pain I've ever felt before as I swallow the sickening feeling of being totally in the dark.
