January 1862.

Henry left broken hearted in the morning and I retired back to bed until Doctor Robins came for my check-up. My legs are elevated for a while, before finally he makes the solemn announcement that I am expecting again. I'm pregnant. He says I'm due in September, and my heart sinks because I know that Henry won't be home till the war ends or until Christmas. He leaves me alone and I think about what he just said. I knew it was inevitable that I would be pregnant again. It seems impossible not to be with Henry. He's such a good father and he's amazing behind closed doors in the bedroom. But a part of me senses that this time is going to be a lot harder than when James was born.
