Piper awoke to a house in an uproar. A suit of clothes belonging to Mr. Di Angelo, comprising a black wool jacket and beaver felt hat, a cream-colored waistcoat, stock, and cravat, and a pair of nankeen breeches had gone missing the day before.
Mr. Di Angelo noticed that these garments were missing when he dressed for the ball.
The maids who looked after Mr. Di Angelo's room were questioned. They insisted that the clothes had been there when they tidied up that morning.
At breakfast, Piper heard of how Phoebe, Lady Thalia's maid, had not returned to the servant's quarters the night before. She was found unconscious in Lady Thalia's boudoir after having been given Valerian root tea spiked with opium.
