The long-awaited Olympus Ball was scheduled for December 6th, Saint Nicholas Day. Lady Thalia invited the other girls over to her sitting room that morning for a breakfast ball. In their night shifts and dressing gowns, they practiced steps from the latest dancing manual as Piper played the harpsichord. Out of all of them, Annabeth thought Miss Levesque was the best dancer. She hopped through the gavotte like a little bird and floated through the Young Widow like a feather on the air.
Several servants brought up breakfast at thirty minutes past nine. They put out a spread of toasted crumpets and brioche, rose petal jam, lemon marmalade, pork sausages, sautéed mushrooms, and soft-boiled eggs.
