2. Are You Happy?

One Month Later

A happily married couple... That’s how everyone considers me and Arjun. And I know why they think so.. We are very close. We care about each other; we support each other.. In a way, we behave almost like a happily married couple.. But yeah.. “almost!” We may seem like two people in a happy relationship. But we still haven’t figured out the main ingredient... Love! We may care about each other, because that’s what friends do. They will always care about each other. And yeah.. So we too!

Soon after the wedding, we had to move to Mumbai. The office work and everything else were really at hell due to all of that sudden wedding preparation. And I’m finally really glad that we are alone in our apartment. We can be ourselves without worrying about anyone or anything. The biggest reason for which I was really glad was Sanskar! He is still there beside me, a few steps away from my door.. My new neighbor!! It also was a good decision for him to move to here since Sanky and Arjun have started to develop a really good friendship. And yes, it’s always a three musketeers kind of situation in my life rather than a happily married couple! Whatever it is, I’m happy for the bond we share..

Today is just like any other day. The hectic office work. Being a techie is not as cool as like it shows in the movies. A really tiresome job. And then the jerky boss. Well... Like every other employee, I also hate my boss.  Whatever, life has to move on. Well, first we have to have breakfast. I quickly made breakfast and was about to call Arjun, but yeah as usual he came even before my yelling!

“Hey, I forgot to tell you something!” Arjun said as he prepared his plate. And his face clearly shows that it’s important. “What is it?” I asked while joining him on the table.

“Sam, I have to go to Delhi. It’s a very important meeting. Everything happened in a hurry, that’s why I couldn’t inform you earlier..“He said while having breakfast. I was relieved. It’s just an office trip. But when I first saw his face, it was like it’s something even more big. “That’s it! Your expression was like you were finally going to admit about you were cheating!!” I said shaking my head. He was taken aback at my comment. But yeah, anyone would be. That comment was a little hard. “By the way, how long will you be gone?” I asked him again. “3 days.. I hope Sanskar will be here, so that you don’t have to be alone.” He finished breakfast and got up to leave. Before taking his bag, he wrapped me in a hug. “Take care. I will see you after 3 days. And yeah, I have already informed Sanky." I relaxed into his hug. With kiss on my forehead, he was soon out of the door.

“You have to land soon on the earth Riya!“ I said as I pinched my colleague on her hand. I followed her gaze. As usual her eyes and mind were stuck on the usual spot. There he is, my handsome best friend. “You have to stop ogling him Riya!“ I reminded her again while turning her face to the monitor again. We have to finish this code as soon as possible. But as long as my sweet bestie is there in front us I don’t think it will be possible. But still I have to try.

After many efforts, I succeeded in keeping Riya focused on the work. And by the time we finished, it was lunch break. I quickly grabbed my things from Riya’a cubicle and made my way to my own cubicle. Just as I kept everything on my desk, as usual my lunch partner is there, leaning on the cubicle. “Ready to attack the food?” Sanky asked while raising his eyebrows. Then even without waiting for my reply he grabbed my wrist. I quickly grabbed my phone before we made our way to food court.

After getting your lunch we made our way to our usual spot. “What’s the matter with you!“ I blurted out finally. Sanky’s expression clearly said that he was confused. Leaning towards the table he raised his eyebrows. “You can’t leave a girl ogling at you for this long. She has been behind behind you since the day one. She doesn’t even focus on the work. This can’t continue yaar..“ I have to say these words some day. So I did. And he very well understood whom I’m talking about. Leaning back on his chair, he slowly rubbed his forehead. “ Sam you know everything. Still you are saying these! “

I smiled as I was expecting the same response. But that doesn’t mean this charade should continue. I dragged my chair close to his and put my hand on his. “ I know everything, and I’m not asking you to go out with her! Talk to her, and make understand you are not ready for this. She won’t leave your back until you talk to her! “ That was the truth. A girl will keep her hopes up until she gets a negative sign. And Riya is my friend and I can’t see her breaking her heart one day because of her expectations.
“I will talk to her Sam! Very soon.."

The day was really exhausting. My body has already started begging for my bed, and here I’m cleaning my kitchen. I looked into the living room from my open kitchen and saw Sanky scrolling through his phone. He seems like he is still thinking about our conversation during lunch. Well, he should think about it! I thought as I put the remaining food items in the refrigerator. I could really get a black coffee! It might take my exhaustion away for a while. “Coffee?" I yelled from the kitchen. “Yeah sure!” The reply was really quick! Within a few minutes I gathered two mugs of steaming black coffee-with no sugar and joined him in the couch. He was really restless, and I feel bad for him when I remembered it was because of our conversation. But it was necessary! We finished our coffee in silence, which was very unusual! As I retrieving towards my room after cleaning coffee mugs, Sanky called after me. “ Care to join me for a movie?"

I wondered what’s going in his mind as made my way back to the couch. “Which one?“ He was going through the movies to select one. Hearing my question he raised his head and looked at me. “Kal Ho Na Ho!“ There you go..I had a doubt that something is wrong. But now I’m damn sure that something is really wrong. Otherwise he will never bring up this movie. I stared back at him with an I-can’t-believe-you! expression! “Okey.. That’s enough! Spill it out!" I demanded as I turned around in the couch facing him.

“Are you happy?“ He surprised me with the most unexpected question! I looked straight into his eyes confused. Why is he asking this now? And where did even this question came from? I still couldn’t understand what is going on his head. Clearly seeing my confused face, he repeated the question again, this time with a little more clarity. “Are you happy in this relationship?” There you go again.. I was not so ready for this conversation, and he clearly knew that! For a second I felt like he is taking revenge for the conversation we had earlier today. But I know he just worried about me! That’s the problem, he is always worried about me rather than himself!

“Why are we having this conversation now?" I was clearly showing him my lack of interest in this conversation. He took my hands in his. While slowly stroking those hands he said, “You can’t live in a marriage as just friends forever! You know that very well!“ It was the truth, one which I have been facing for some time now. Shaking my head i gave him my response, “We care for each other! That’s enough for now. And I’m happy by letting it to be like that. And about the future, I’m sure everything will be alright!“  Will it be?  I questioned myself as the words came out of my lips.  But I’m happy to let things be like the way it is for now. Everything else I have already gave into the hands of my fate. As I started to retreat to my room, Sanky’s voice came again,
“I just want you to be happy Sam!“

With a small smile I nod, “I know! ... Good night Sanky..“
With that I closed my bedroom door. As I tried to sleep, his words echoed in my head...
“You can’t live in a marriage as just friends forever!”
