Hikari didn't notice the look of determination on Hinata's face until he spoke.
"What?"
Hikari's head snapped up at his tone. She didn't know the short boy could sound like that. She glanced up at her boyfriend, noticing that his face was still serious. She knew he was challenging him, but she also knew that this wasn't the place to do that. It was disrespectful to the upperclassmen.
"H-hey babe, play nice." She whispered to her boyfriend, who unfortunately didn't hear her through his anger.
"I'm trying my best—" Hinata started, but flinched and paused abruptly, before opening his mouth once again. "So don't tell me everything was a waste!"
The two boys were glaring at each other.
Hikari bit her lip once again, as her hand unconsciously grabbed onto the hem of him sleeve. She was a happy-go-lucky kind of girl, so she didn't like when people fought like this.
"You're not opponents anymore." Daichi's voice suddenly made her avert her eyes over to him. His hand was rubbing the back of his head. "In this sport, what's important is team wor—"
But before he could finish, Hinata spoke up.
"Let's fight it out. Right here, right now."
Hikari's eyes widened at his declaration, before glancing at the upperclassmen, wondering if they would allow this.
'This is bad.' She thought to herself. 'Tobio would never back down from a challenge like this.'
"Hey!" Tanaka suddenly spoke, clearly annoyed, "Daichi's still talking!"
He too was ignored, however.
"Fight it out?" Kageyama repeated.
"A volleyball match." Hinata replied.
"How are we going to fight it out man-to-man?" Kageyama asked.
Hinata froze before replying, saying the first thing that came to mind, "b-by passing..."
"Passing? How's that going to decide anything?"
"Hey! Listen to Daichi!" Tanaka cut in again.
Hikari froze as her eyes landed on Daichi. He looked like he was slowly gathering some dark aura, and he looked like he was about to release it, when an unknown voice stopped him.
"The volleyball team sure is noisy." A middle aged man who obviously had a wig on, suddenly walked into the gym. He was wearing a brown suit, and his facial expression looked extremely scrutinizing.
Hikari thought that he might be an admin of the school.
"It's the vice principal." Tanaka said, confirming her suspicions.
"You're not fighting, are you?" The vice principal asked, stopping just a couple meters from them, when Hikari realized that the two boys were still glaring at each other.
'No, this is not good at all,' Hikari thought to herself as she spared another glance at her boyfriend. She knew that look on his face. She knew that he was well past the point of no return now.
"It's just friendly competition, right?" Daichi forced a smile.
"Shh," Tanaka whispered to the two, "the vice principal hates troublemakers."
