"please don't tell him,"
present day, irl!THE L/N'S GREETED THE PARKERS AS THEY WERE WELCOMED INSIDE. y/n and her family were hosting a small new-years eve gathering, inviting several of y/n's school friends and any of their family members that didn't have other plans.
y/n's parents became fast friends with all of the other parents and guardians. the mothers were busy catching up by the dining room, fathers were enjoying casual conversation on sport by the television. the teenagers on the other hand, were in the kitchen gorging on food and laughing.
"yeah, so that's how i got chased by a chipmunk," ned summarised, earning a hearty laugh from all the teens. both ned and peter were in attendance, making y/n visibly tense.
y/n recently came to the conclusion that her feelings for peter ran far deeper than an innocent, short-lived crush- she was in love with the boy. she didn't know how to act, she didn't know how to casually sit there and enjoy idle chatter when she'd much rather be snuggled up beside him as they watched the entire star wars franchise.
luckily for her, peter didn't seem to sense her uneasy expression, which would be surprising for a boy with enhanced senses. she had mj, who was very observant and noticed her change in demeanour from the start of the evening.
and just to add to the internalised drama within y/n's brain, harrison and his family was also invited. although him and y/n were in much better terms and were strictly platonic, she couldn't help but think about how awkward it was for him to have the girl he used to like in the same room as the guy he knew she liked a little too much.
mj watched y/n with a knowing glance as she sat in a tense silence, occasionally smiling at harrison who often gave her a cheerful glance. soon it became too much for mj, "can i speak to you outside, y/n?" she asked, gesturing to the back door which led to their garden.
y/n nodded in confusion, quickly getting up to see what the issue was. she closed the kitchen door behind her as they walked to the middle of the garden, being far enough from earshot.
"so why'd you want to speak in private?" y/n asked her best friend with curiosity, genuinely relieved she was quickly ushered away from the inner debate she was holding for the two boys currently chatting away in her home.
"you're in love with peter," she sighed in revelation.
y/n's face froze, paling at the fact her best friend knew, "please don't tell him," she practically begged.
"of course i won't," she smiled, content at her detective and deduction skills.soon enough the two best friends were in a heavy conversation where y/n was quick to confess everything she ever felt for the brunette and almost everything she ever included in her letters, even admitting to writing them.

"y/n, could you grab the party poppers from your room," y/n's mother yelled through the kitchen door, despite the fact that she was currently out of earshot and preoccupied. peter was quick to notice the intense conversation she seemed to be having with mj, taking it upon himself to grab them himself.
"hey, mrs.l/n, i'll grab them for you," peter offered, excusing himself from ned and harrison's conversation and made his way to where the parents were. y/n's mother showed him a smile, "they should be in a storage box under her bed,"
peter smiled, nodding, before making his way to the room he remembered spending several hours studying with the cheerful girl.
her room was neat and tidy. earlier that day, y/n was instructed, against her will, to clean her room. if only she would have known in advance that the boy she loved would be venturing inside, she would have cleaned faster and even more thoroughly.
peter turned on the light switch, smiling at the familiar collection of polaroid photos on her wall, one of which included the both of them working hard on their project that y/n's mother took unbeknownst to the pair.
he quickly remembered why he was stood inside the room of the pretty girl he recently befriended, kneeling to reach for a box under her bed. peter pulled out a vintage hatbox, questioning its contents.
expecting to find a series of party poppers, he quickly removed the lid to double check, not thinking that he'd be met with his name in a familiar cursive handwriting. he reached into the box, pulling out a series of letters (16 to be exact)- each envelope was uniquely decorated and numbered.
he didn't know whether it would be an invasion of privacy if he opened and read them, then again it was addressed to him- she obviously wanted him to see them, right?
but his curiosity outweighed all his dominant morals of privacy as he made himself comfortable on her carpet, opening the first letter. then the second, and the third.
the more he read, the more the picture became clearer for him.

"hey, sweetie," y/n's mother called as she the kitchen door, y/n's face perking up from her much more relaxed conversation in peter's absence.
y/n and mj moved back into the kitchen after summarising their conversation, she was feeling much more relaxed. with the lack of peter's presence seemed to ease her stress instantaneously as she walked back into the kitchen.
"yeah, mum," she acknowledged, watching as she stood by the door.
"could you check on peter?" she smiled, "i sent him in your room to find the poppers but i don't think he's found them,"instant alarm filled her features as she nodded and made a straight bee-line for her bedroom. she knew exactly what was next to the box of party poppers.
she hurriedly opened the door, instantly met with the face of shock, guilt and surprise. the brown-eyed boy quickly stood up, disregarding the abundance of opened letters in his hands, watching as tears started to well up in the girl's eyes.
she watched as he put the final letter down, she watched as he tried to walk over to her, she watched as he tried to stop her tears from falling.
but he watched as she ran out of her own home in tears.
