Jade's POV
As I sat in the moving truck I couldn’t help think what could happen next. I have lost everything. My big, comfy house, all my friends, the place where I grew up, and most importantly I have lost my mom. After a bad incident of her overwhelming drug problem, she had gotten busted for having and distributing cocaine, among other things. Resulting in my mom being put in prison and my dad getting full custody of me. We had lost all the money she had put away for my dad and me, not leaving us with much. This was a couple months back, but after receiving all the back lash from everyone in our town, we decided to move. Far.
Here I am in some random beach town in South Carolina. Far away from California, far away from my friends, and of course, far away from my mom. I still loved my mom though, even though I won’t be seeing her for a very long time. She was a good person, just a bad mom getting mixed up in the wrong things. Letting her bad choices take over her.
I looked out the window as we drove down the street, passing small businesses and seeing the beach out at the horizon. This town looking more secluded and barren from the warm welcoming air I was used to in Cali. It sure is going to be something that will take some time to get used to. Although, with the way things have turned out so far I don’t think I would be able to get used to this.
I saw the trees casting shadows along the streets as the sun was slowly coming down from the sky. I felt the cool air hit my face as I rolled up the window. The cold is something I am not familiar with. I couldn’t help but feel completely defenseless. Boy, how I wish things turned out differently.
I snapped out of my thoughts as we began to slow down and turn into a driveway to a small little cottage-like house. It wasn’t too small, it still had 2 stories and a nice wooden deck with lots of trees and flowers in the front yard, it was just a change from my house in Cali.
I sighed and let out my nerves as I looked over to my dad who had parked the truck. He gave me a reassuring smile, even though I knew he was as nervous and anxious as I was. He opened the door and said “well, better start settling in honey” then left to go lift up the back door of the truck, revealing all of our belongings. We didn’t have much, just the things we felt we needed, we didn’t have money to get all the rest of our things shipped over, plus our new house came with all the necessities.
I took a deep breath and got out of the truck. I was wearing shorts and a tank top with a sweater/ cardigan. As I stepped out into the chilly air, it hit me that I was not in Cali anymore. I grabbed my sweater covering my chest and crossing my arms instantly feeling frozen. It wasn’t that cold out considering it was the end of July but to me it was new.
I walked back to the end of the truck as I saw my dad unloading boxes, he gave me one and told me to head up to house. I do as he says and star walking up the stairs up to the front door. I twisted the knob and opened it with my foot as it squeaked open. It slammed behind me as I took a look around. The living room was small and had the kitchen in the corner behind a swinging door. It seemed dusty and old, with every step the floor would creek. I knew it wouldn’t be much, but this was my new home.
I set the box down and jogged up the stairs eager to see my new room. It was the only room upstairs apart from the bathroom and some closet. I opened the door and wasn’t too disappointed. I mean sure it wasn’t as nice as my old room but it had a view of the beach and nice big windows, it was the brightest room in the house, and it was a good size. I sat on my window seat and looked out, seeing the sun beginning to set. I heard the door downstairs slam as I hear my dad dropping more boxes. Better go help before it gets dark.
I walk downstairs as my dad walks back outside, I follow and as I look over I see a boy about my age and his mom walk over to the truck. I wonder what they want, I thought to myself. I slowly walked down the stairs of the deck, nervous to talk to them. I heard the woman greeting my dad and welcoming him as he started to unload more boxes. He stopped and started talking to her about the neighborhood. As I began to walk up to them and show myself around the corner of the truck the woman stopped and smiled at me.
“Oh hello there dear, I didn’t see you! Welcome to the neighborhood” she said kindly. As soon as she started talking I saw her son jolt his head up from looking at the ground and lay his eyes on me.
“Thank you so much” I replied giving her a small smile and then looking over at her son, who seemed to be frozen. I gave him a shy smile and then looked back at my dad as he continued talking to the woman.
I grab a small box from the ground trying to get away from the awkwardness. “Oh, Justin help her would you?” The woman said. He hesitated and then came towards me and grabbed a heavier box. I began to walk to the house as I heard him following behind me.
