Katsuki was quiet as his teachers tried to usher him and his other classmates away from the boy furiously writing and drawing in a notebook in the corner of the classroom. He wasn't even sitting in a chair. He was just on the ground hunched over his notebook and his colored pencils were flying across the page.
He didn't understand why his best friend was keeping to himself in a corner, why he'd been keeping himself so quiet that day or why their teachers were acting like his Izu was sick. Was he sick? If he was sick why didn't he just stay home with Aunty Inko? He didn't fully understand what was happening even when the teachers tried to explain it to them. They put the words in an easy to understand way but that didn't leave him any less confused on why they were acting the way they were.
"Let's leave Midoriya alone, you guys. We've got to be extra careful around him. He's quirkless," and the way Miss Akira said the word quirkless made him mad. She said it like it something was wrong with his best friend. Sure it was weird to not have a quirk but that didn't mean it was wrong did it?
Katsuki wanted to hear it from Izu though so he walked over to his green best friend and got a glimpse of his notebook. "Is it true? You're quirkless?" He only got a nod in return so he stepped a bit closer and finally caught a few words of what was written across the top of the page. "Hero Costume" in big black letters was all he could read from where he stood. "You're quirkless and still want to be a hero?" He was genuinely confused. He'd never heard of or seen a quirkless pro hero before. Would Izu be the one?
Suddenly Izuku spun around with a bright smile and shoved his notebook in the blonde's face. Katsuki puts his hand on the top of the book and lowers it out of his face so he could see his friend better. "I want to be a support hero! Mama and I saw one on TV when we got home from the doctor's yesterday! They were talking about how they help pro heroes with gear, suits, and weapons for when they fight villains! They're so cool Kacchan! They help so many pros and civilians!" The way Izuku was smiling at him made him smile.
"That does sound cool Izu! But, if you're not making a costume for yourself, who are you making one for?" He cocked his head to the side trying to figure it out before Izuku put his notebook into his hands and told him to look at it. Then he read the rest of the title he'd seen. 'Hero Costume for KACCHAN!' was written across the top of the page and his name was in a fiery red. He glanced up at his friend to see him beaming at him with pride and determination. The six year old in front of him had little notations on what they both knew about his quirk so far. They didn't know a whole lot but they did know that when he sweat he could make it explode and he absolutely loved it. He wondered -
"And guess what?! I think I figured out a way to make your explosions bigger!" This is why he was Katsuki's best friend. Not only could he basically read his mind but he knew exactly what the blonde liked.
"Bigger?" Katsuki takes his friend by the hand and leads him back to his spot on the floor where all of his art supplies and other notebooks were at. "You think we can make them bigger? Do you think I would be able to shoot off explosions like a gun?" Katsuki was so enraptured with everything Izu was saying. He knew that they'd have to work on a lot of things for a long time but he had Izu to help him so he wasn't worried about it.
"-then I was thinking maybe if we put something here you could press a button or something and maybe shoot your explosion? I'm not sure, I've got to think on it." Izuku drew his lips to the side and scrunched his eyebrows together in deep concentration. They sat in silence for several minutes as Izuku scribbles down a few more notes and
"Hey, Izu?" The blonde waited for some kind of answer from his friend and finally got one in the form of a distracted hum. "Wanna come over to my house today, Izu? We can ask my mom and Aunty Inko when they come get us? I got this awesome Crimson Riot coloring book and I made dad get you one too so we can color together!" Katsuki's voice made the boy in front of him startle but he settles quickly and becomes excited.
"You mean it!?" Izu's eyes were sparkling and hopeful.
"Why, wouldn't I?" Katsuki was confused. Him and Izuku hung out all the time. This certainly wouldn't be the first or last time they'd play or color together at his house.
Izu's eyes dull and dim a bit and Katsuki scrunches his eyebrows. Did he say something wrong? "It's just, mom told me my friends might not want to hang out anymore. She told me people might not want to be friends with me anymore because I don't have a quirk. Mom told me it's not my fault but you might try to be more careful around me." He's got red cheeks and a wobbly voice and Katsuki doesn't like it.
He clicks his teeth and shoves Izuku's shoulder lightly. "Look, not gonna lie. You not having a quirk is weird." He shrugs his shoulders and sees his friend's shoulders drop a bit more. "But that doesn't mean you're not my best friend." He rolls his eyes at the thought. "You not having a quirk is the least weird thing about you. You're weird but it's a good weird. Does that make sense?" Katsuki didn't know if he was making any sense or not but it seemed to cheer up the boy in front of him so he was just going to go with it.
"You mean that?" Izuku was teary eyed with that question again so Katsuki rolled his eyes at him once more to even things out.
Tch. "You know I don't say things I don't mean, Deku." A light shove to Izuku's arm and the boy was back to giggling brightly and shining like the sun.
"I know! I just wanted to make sure!"
Katsuki shook his head and then picked up one of Izuku's other notebooks that was scattered on the ground.
"So did you start any costumes for anyone else or just for me?" Katsuki starts to flip through the notebook till it's taken out of his hands. He looks up to yell at Deku for just snatching the book from his hands but the words die on his tongue when he sees how excited his freckled friend was to look through the notebook for something specific.
"I started drawing out and writing down ideas for upgrades on a few different hero costumes and ones that would work for whoever wanted it! There was this one thing I came up with last night that's supposed to help brace All Might's wrists for when he does his smashes! I can't remember if it's in this one or my other one or if I left it at home but I know you would love it and might want to add it on to your costume too because-" That was about how much the blonde could make out before his friend started too talk too fast for him too understand.
Katsuki just watched his friend in interest for almost the rest of the school day. No one came to bother them but he could hear other kids whispering about Izuku and later him when he didn't leave the boy's side. He would have yelled at them to stop but Izuku asked him not too. He didn't want to upset his friend any more than he already was for the day so he just kept himself in his seat on the floor.
He knew that the other kids in class were going to try to be mean to the both of them because of Izuku being quirkless, they weren't really quiet with their whispers, but he refused to stop being friend with the little green boy because of it. Izuku was his best friend in the whole world and just because he was different than all the other kids didn't mean he was going to stop being his friend.
In fact it just made him even more special.
Which was cool.
Because that meant Katsuki was cooler just by assoctitation- assosilation-asossastion- whatever that word was.
He was proud to be Izuku's friend and everyone else could just kiss his butt.
