'Where in the hell was, Izuku? He was supposed to meet me here after the exam.' Everyone else was back already but Izuku's bus. Did something happen during the exams? Did something happen to the bus? Why were they running a half hour late? 'Chill, Kat. Maybe it's just traffic. Don't jump to conclusions. Especially conclusions you don't want to be happening. Just chill the fuck, dude.'
Katsuki has to talk himself down from freaking out and finally manages to get a hold of at least his initial responses to Izuku being late to anywhere. He always make it a point to be punctual, going so far as to be early most times. Izuku says that he does't need people to paint of negative picture of him before they're told he's quirkless and they paint an even worse one. If Izuku is late then either something bad happened or he found another cat and he has high doubts for the cat theory.
Katsuki had already gotten changed out of his sweaty and filthy workout clothes he wore for the physical exam and was waiting on the steps of the written testing facility he and Izu agreed to meet back up at. He had his gym bag sitting next to him with his elbows resting on his knees. He needed to distract himself so he finally pulled his cellphone out of his bag and saw he'd missed two calls and had several unread messages. He saw that one of the missed calls was from his mom and the other was from his Aunt Inko. They both left voicemails telling him that they had all the faith in the world that both he and Izuku would pass the exams with flying colors and good luck on both exams. His mom's message was a bit more in depth than his Aunt's, which was expected, but she also asked him to keep an eye on Izuku as much as he could.
She told him that they both knew he was strong minded and could probably kick everyone's asses bare handed but he had to keep in mind that people still treated quirkless people like they were less than.
Less than human.
Less deserving to be given the same opportunities as those with quirks.
She reminded him that just because he and his family, along with maybe three other people, accepted Izuku wholehearted didn't mean everyone else would. Even if people were on the path to be heroes, that didn't mean they treated everyone fairly. Biases run deep and it wore people down, no matter how strong they were.
He didn't need the reminder because it was almost always on his mind. He watched all the disgusted looks be thrown at his best friend, while Izuku just ignored their existences. Izuku smiled in the face of adversity and says "fuck you, you can't hurt me". Katsuki has always been proud of his friend for not letting those assholes get too him, but he worried sometimes if Izuku was just hiding away how he really feels to keep from him from worrying further. Izu was always telling him he was 'fine' but there's a look in his eyes sometimes that's just tired.
It seems like he was a bit too deep in thought over his mom's voicemail because before he could move on to the text messages he got, Izuku's bus finally showed up. Katsuki looked around him and saw he was the only one outside anymore or even at the facility it seemed.
Izuku was one of the first people off the bus with a poker look placed firmly on his face. Then he caught Katsuki's eyes and smiled widely bringing his fingers up to wiggle them back and forth while he started a jog over to him. "I was able to keep the promise of no broken bones, Kacchan! And I'm very much in the clear for all these bruises and scrapes and whatever cause you didn't spe-" Katsuki launched himself into his friend's chest when he reached about three feet in front of the bottom step of the stairs, burying his face in Izuku's neck before he could finish his loophole on the minor injuries he got.
"I was worried something happened at your exam. You're the last bus to get back and y'all took so long that no one else is here anymore." There aren't any tears but his voice is thick with concern. Katsuki tightened his arms around Izuku as if someone was going to yank him away, just before he pulls away himself to finish his explanation on the sudden break of his normal facade. "I'm just glad you're back and have all your bones intact." The concern is working it's way out of his mind and body as he does a visual check over Izuku and sees nothing worse than what he himself has. There's no deep cuts or limbs facing the wrong way and there's barely any blood clinging to the boy's skin. "You really took to heart the 'don't get hurt' thing huh?" 'I'm so fucking proud'.
