Avani mindlessly walked to the shining object, crushing the pieces of plastic that had just crumbled beneath her.
Her outreached hand grasped the object and realized that it was an oval.
It didn't look like anything special and she cursed herself for letting that stupid necklace take control over her thoughts.
She had just murdered everyone who was here.
Her tears dripped down for about the ninth million times as the swirly green oval disappeared and reappeared connected to her necklace.
"No!" she cried out.
Avani swung her wand and a pair of scissors appeared in her hand instead of the wand.
She tried to cut the necklace, but no matter how strong and sharp the scissors were, the string won't budge.
Avani ran to a blade that was laying on the ground and jabbed it at the string.
Nothing.
That's when she couldn't hold it in anymore.
She broke.
"Why? Why am I doing this? Why is it me?"
Her sobs died down when she saw that she missed to see the piece of golden foil underneath where the mysterious oval was sitting.
She limped over to the piece of foil and glared at it.
There were words written in calligraphy.
"Lava might not be right, but fire might."
As soon as Avani finished reading it, the light foil crumbled into tiny pieces and drifted away.
"Lava might not be right, but fire might? What kind of clue is that-"
Suddenly, the volcano that Avani didn't know existed erupted with more than a dozen of birds yelped out and barely managed to fly away.
Avani shuddered at the memory of the fire-lighting plastic and refused to go anywhere close to another fire or heat related thing.
But the animals...
But I'm scared...
But the plants...
But I might be burnt to death...
But the nature!
Avani was having an argument with herself when she heard an unmistakable girl's shriek coming from around the volcano.
With no hesitation, Avani ran towards the exploding volcano.

Avani ran over to the dark-haired girl who was sitting on the ground, hugging her legs.
"Hey are-"
Avani reached down and wanted to pat the girl on the back and try to comfort her, but her hand passed right through her body.
"Wha-?"
Then, the girl disappeared through the thin air.
Avani stood up.
It was all just a bait for her to come running!
Avani cursed herself once again for letting people take control of her own thoughts.
Suddenly, Avani noticed that she wasn't in the forest with the volcano anymore.
She was back home.
It was dark, the stars were out, and so was her brother.
He was smoking.
Avani's eyes popped out of her head as she watched Mateo drop his cigar on the ground without picking it up.
She wanted to confront him, telling him that it wasn't right, that humans will soon destroy the planet if this kept up.
But no one argued with Mateo.
No one.
Avani bit her lip and looked down, she had to. She had to tell her own family about this.
"M-Mateo?"
Mateo snapped his head in Avani's direction and glared.
"So you disappear for months and decide to come back now?"
Avani blinked back tears, he, her own step-brother, didn't even realize that she lost weight?
"Um...you really shouldn't...litter..." Avani said no louder than a whisper.
"Is that so? Then why are you walking around? Isn't this piece of garbage-" he waved and motioned to Avani. "-supposed to be in the dumpster?"
Avani's mouth hung open.
He did not just-
"Mateo, honey, would you mind coming in?"
Her step-mom.
The one that disowned her.
The only one that took her in when Avani had no one.
Mateo glared at Avani one last time before walking in.
"Oh, and you're officially unadopted."
Avani swallowed hard.
Now she really had no one.
She bent over and picked up the discarded cigar and crushed it beneath her fingers as it disappeared.
"A-Avani? I-is that you?"
The sound of her step-mom's voice was heart-breaking.
"Yes mom, that's her." Mateo eye rolled.
Avani awkwardly waved. "Oh, I was just leaving."
Her step-mom, Avery, gulped and nodded. "Do you have a place to stay? Would you like me to drive you to the orphanage?"
Avani looked down.
Did she have a place to stay?
No.
Would she like to be driven by her ex-step-mom and ex-step-brother to the orphanage?
Also a no.
"I- erm." Avani cleared her throat. "Yes, I do have a place to stay, thank you very much, and now, I need to get going, I was just telling Mateo that he shouldn't smoke."
Avery's eyes turned into saucers when Avani mentioned Mateo smoking.
Avani smirked, he mustn't have told her about him smoking.
"Well, nice seeing you again! I'll get going."
Mateo was shooting daggers at Avani with his eyes as Avani walked right out of her old lawn and down the streets.
When she got out of sight from her old family, she exhaled a breath of relief.
Then, she tripped on something.
It was a plastic bottle.
Rolling her eyes, Avani picked it up and was about to crush and destroy it again when she noticed the writing on it.
Control your waves, don't let them control you.
And just like that, Avani slipped from reality and fell into the darkness.
