CHAPTER THREE━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
GROANING FROM A DELAYED awakening, Mila is met with dim lights, dirty clothes, and an open cell door. Her heart races while she leans on her elbows for support, recalling everything that had happened and the reason why she was left there with a snapped neck. With her mind now unclouded and her face distorted by a scowl, she focuses her hearing, searching for the presence of the person who was responsible.
Throughout numerous voices and other jumbled noises, she singles out the sound of an out-of-character whistling. She decides to trust her instincts, heading towards where it was coming from.
Soon she found herself under the school, in the underground tunnel system, beginning a paced walk towards the whistles. Along the way she managed to pick up on Alaric, Josie, and Lizzie's voices, evidence they had made it back home safely. She planned on greeting them after she was done trying to find Kai because, if it wasn't obvious, they had unfinished business.
The sight of him chained to a beam graced her fierce eyes, and she swipes some hair out of face, bracing herself for the complexity and difficulty that's ingrained in their relationship. He notices her after a few more steps, his face lighting up at her presence, contrasting with her unamused features.
"Hey! I was wondering when you'd wake up. Care to be my knight in shining armor? Or princess in... a shining tiara? I don't know where I'm going with this analogy but — point is — you should totally let me out."
"Let me guess: Whatever plan you schemed up failed, like they always do, and now you're minutes away from ending up in yet another prison world. Just like I said — predictable," Mila chastised, her arms coming up to cross over her chest.
"And you abandoning everything else to find me," Kai resorts, motionless from the shoulders down because of the restraints, "because you can't help but care. Predictable."
"You're right. I'm probably being misleading. Have fun with whatever punishment Ric comes up with." She turns to leave, finding him absolutely unbearable.
"Mila, wait! He'll kill me!" He calls out to her, and she stops in her tracks.
Without twisting around, so he doesn't see the break in composure, she utters, "So what?"
"Do... do you really hate that much?" Kai's voice is much quieter, smaller with this response.
Mila bits her bottom lip, containing whatever noise would have came out from the emotion overwhelming her entire being. Different parts of her wrestle with what to do next. Because, no, she didn't hate him; that was always the problem.
Ultimately, without doing much logical thinking, she slowly makes her way back over to him. He's still in the horrendous suit from earlier when he was pretending to be some posh expert — although, chains were covering the majority of the outfit. The only thing different is the depth in his eyes from confronting his worst fear.
