"Got it?" April stared intently at Seth and he nodded.
She had just explained her simple plan.
A. Seth was going to jump down and make it to the exit across the room. Through the windows it looked as if there weren't any rabid students lurking the halls, so he may be safe on the outside.
B. His escape would serve as a distraction, so they would hopefully go after him, and she could get down and get out at the exit closest to them.
Two steps, easy, but the plan could go easily awry. They may not go after him, even if he was willing to bang at the door it was still a possibility they would prefer a tasty treat in arms reach, aka her. Or he could get killed and then she would be stuck up there. Or only part of them would go after him and the exit would still be blocked. She sighed knowing she didn't have another option.
"Okay are you ready?" He asked.
"Yeah. Go when you're ready, and here." She passed the fire extinguisher to him. "You may need it."
He nodded and gulped as he looked below. Gathering his courage...he jumped.
The frenzied mass below them watched him fly over him as if he was a tasty hunk of meat... I guess to them he was. He quickly picked himself up and April pressed herself closer to the wall trying to go undetected by them.
"Hey! Yeah come get me you freaks!" He shouted at them.
The snarling group of rabid students hurtled after Seth. Clawing at the air behind him. He made a break for door, but before he could open it he was blocked by the bloody clutches of Veronica, probably the stupidest girl in class, he swung the metal contraption in his hands towards her head, and with a loud thump she fell to the floor. Before one of the students behind him could make a grab for him, he was already safely out the door. The rabid cluster gathered at the exit and moaned as they banged against the door.
In a hurry April dropped to the floor, and dashed for the door. As she was pushing the heavy metal door open, she felt something pull her back by the hair.
She screamed which called the attention of her classmates.
Twisting around. She faced the large form looming in front of her, his snapping jaws drawing closer to her face, his rancid decaying breath drifted out of his mouth and into her nose.
"APRIL!!" She felt two strong arms pull her out of the clutches of the crazed boy before her, and she watched as the door slammed in front of her.
She felt two hands on her face before she could even register what had just happened.
"April, are you okay? Look at me. Are you bleeding? How many finger am I holding up?" Seth said as he raised two fingers. She felt a tear run down her cheek and she quickly brushed it away.
This was not a time to cry.
"I'm okay." She gathered herself and listened to the pounding on the door.
She swung her back pack off her shoulder and set it on the ground in front of her.
"April what are you doing? You shouldn't be eating right now!" Seth said as she pulled the jerky from her bag. She ignored him and carried on. She pulled out her first aid kit, her two knives, her planner, an icy water bottle, and a handful of new pencils.
Then she picked up the bag and dumped the rest of her materials out of the bag. She stuck the items, except the knives, she had brought out back into the bag, and she placed a pack of gum she dumped out back into the bag.
